What is with Carolina?

They have a pretty decent team, Semin, Skinner, Staal, Staal. How are they in a top 5 pick placement right now???

I cant see how they have such a brutal record (4 points higher than the Flames) and with basically 4-5 players better than the Flames currently have.

I know they have had goalie and D problems, but are they really that bad? Plus they play in the worst division in hockey.

AHL goalie and defense, plus a cold offense does it for you.

Not only do they have no real defense, but they have questionable forward depth.

Goaltending is the obvious answer though.

Ward: 9-6-1
Peters and Ellis: 7-13-1

Future looks bright though...half the cap tied up in 5 players.

Ward's injury hurt a couple of ways:

1) Ward is out

2) Ellis is the starter by default

And everybody knows that Ellis plays like a starter when he's backing up, and a back-up when he's starting.

Has anybody mentioned goaltending and D? Oh, good.

The only other thing to add is an abysmal lack of scoring support. We are one line deep, despite having 3-4 solid depth players who are all on horrific career-low skids.

Pathetic defense, mediocre goaltending, no power play to speak of, questionable effort and a few untimely injuries have done them in.

Too many "S" last names. There's your first problem. It's putting them near the end of the alphabet.

None of the above. Plain and simple, it is a lack of leadership. When your captain coasts and sulks his way through half the season every single year it says a lot about the kind of atmosphere they have.

The D is not great, but it's on par with a lot of playoff teams. The goaltending even after Ward was hurt was more than enough to win at least half the games they've lost. Plain and simple, they just gave up, and if you've watched games it's not that hard to see.

Oh, duh how could I forget that? Let's trade him for David Backes.

Plus I'm impressed. You went through that whole post without trashing Skinner.

The D is not on par with a bunch of playoff teams. That's bunk.

No it's not bunk. Try watching a few other teams from time to time and you'll see it too.

None of which explains a brutal 12-game losing streak or whatever it is after they were a 15-9 team with those same problems all along. On an offensive team, the scoring dried up and the effort disappeared. Goaltending and defense have absolutely nothing to do with that, although the crappy power play is part of it it doesn't come anywhere near explaining it.

In addition to all the D and G injuries, Skinner also seems not to be, well, Skinner since his concussion. You can only expect Tlusty to carry them all on his back so far.

Biggest hit or miss team in the league. Since 01-02, they mostly miss the playoffs, but when they make it, bet the house on them making a deep run.
