Future of Sharks goal tending

Of the seven goalies signed to NHL or AHL deals (for this past season), only two are signed for next season (or longer): Niemi and Anderson.

That leaves Greiss, Stalock, Sateri, Heemskerk and Nelson with expiring contracts.

The Sharks will have the ability to make any changes they see fit for the near and long term future of the "last line of defense", be it minor tweaks (re-signing valued players) or wiping the slate clean and get new faces at all levels of the game.

Regardless of the status of signing Grosenick, it appears there will be change(s) coming.

It seems all up and down our lineup 13/14 is a big turnover year for contracts in the Sharks organization. Do we expect to re-sign a majority of these guys? I don't really follow our prospects much (since we don't have much to follow, outside of goaltenders).

I don't think the team really knows what they have beyond Niemi. They likely don't care so much. There's nothing to suggest that there is anyone ready to step up and challenge him at this point even though some could if given the opportunity. Unfortunately, that's not going to happen at this level with this coaching staff. They will probably let Greiss go, re-sign Stalock and let him backup, and let Sateri and Heemskerk platoon in Worcester. J.P. will probably go to San Francisco and Nelson will probably be let go as well. They'll probably put Grosenick in San Francisco as well and let him earn his way.

Of course all this changes if they throw one or two of these guys into a trade. I don't like Stalock's chances to break through here and continue his progression into a solid starter in the NHL. Maybe someone sees enough potential in him to value him enough to be a decent part of a package that allows the Sharks to trade for something they need going forward but I doubt it.

I've always felt better about Sateri than Stalock ... not even really sure why.

Niemi is probably going to re-sign with the team.

Depends on his price. I wouldn't pay anything more than 4.5 mil for him, I don't care how well he is playing. Goaltending is replaceable and shouldn't need a high investment.

Niemi is going to stay until we trade him for LUONGO (just kidding). Thomas will stay until he has a good 5-0 back up record and then we will trade him off to the jets or something. Maybe 5 years down the road we can trade off a couple of those goalies being that they would be developed by then for Jagr.

Greiss is probably gone.

Niemi should not be re-signed for anything north of 4.5M a year and should not be termed north of 3 years.

Stalock should be re-signed.I hope he gets to start some next season.

JP and Sateri in Worcester

I can't comment after that

Pretty sure we didn't qualify JP Anderson, guys.

Might want to take him out of considerations.

Nelson is 100% gone. He was purely for SF (he doesn't even have a jersey number here in Worcester) and I'm guessing that SJ/WOR supplying both starting roster goaltenders was part of their affiliation agreement this season with SF.

Heemskerk is 95% gone. With Anderson running up behind him on the depth chart and a sub par ECHL season plus San Jose going out and signing Grosenick to an NHL deal means that's all she wrote on Heemskerk.

Stalock is 99% back. Why not 100%? Well, he is a RFA and a team could sweep in and make him an offer. I'm not sure if that chance is even 1%, but 99.9% sounds lame so we'll go with 99%.

Greiss is 95% gone. SJ either lets Greiss go or Stalock, there's not room for the two of them. Everything I'm hearing says it's Stalock that's staying.

Sateri will 100% receive an offer better than the qualifying offer SJ is "required" to make to him to retain his rights. I'm not ready to give a percentage yet on if he signs it or not. And yes, I'll have more on that as the season winds down...

Fixed that.

Think you worded that wrong, assume you meant Greiss is gone, not Stalock.

Yeah, my original wording was a little ambiguous. I've edited it to clarify. Thanks.

I think the Sharks SHOULD trade Neimi(friendly contract) this summer. Our defense is good enough to let Stalock have a crack with Sateri as a 1B..If both struggle it is easy enough to go out and sign a vet G to help. Atleast we'll know if they can play..Trading Nemo frees up 3.8mil. Take the picks/prospects or a 2nd line winger in return.

Sateri is not ready for the NHL. Not even close.

This...and I'm also pretty comfortable saying that Stalock isn't ready to carry an NHL team either.

Trading an above average starting goalie on an excellent contract is a bad idea.

Which goes to show the difficulty in scouting goaltenders.

The same was essentially said of Niemi at the beginning of the season when the Hawks won the Stanley Cup.

There are so many moving parts with goaltending it really is virtually impossible to get a truly accurate read on one's true potential.
