Phaneuf's season, underrated?

http://leafshero.wordpress.com/2013/...ris-candidate/

"In short, Dion Phaneuf plays against harder competition than any other player in the league, with less support from team mates than any other defensemen in the league while also being given among the lowest amount of offensive zone starts."

An article that goes into advanced statistics to show Phaneuf true worth.

7 Goals, 5th among D
24 points, 5th among D
TOI/G 25:40, 7th among D
SH TOI/G 3:02, Hits 106, Blocked Shots 72, all top 30 in league
None offencive zone starts 58.8%, 5th among D
Quality of compeition, 1.90, 1st in NHL
Quality of team mates, -.430, Last in NHL

Last night's post game (paraphrased):

Reporter: "Why were you double shifting Nash so much this game?"
Tortorella: "I was just trying to get him away from Phaneuf"

Weird that an NHL coach would actually be scared of matching up his stars against Phaneuf, given his reputation around here.

he's definitely been great this year. This is coming from someone with the user title phaneuf sucks for a good 2 years now.

Hes just been overshadowed by kadri this year for the season he is having. Definitely playing like a #1 this year and a top 15 d man in the league especially given the fact hes had an AHL partner all year

Same. I was really hard on Phaneuf the past few years, and was hoping he wouldn't get the C so management wouldn't be opposed to us moving him, but he's just be an animal for Toronto this year and for most of last year, really reinvented his game and shut up a lot of critics like myself.

Phaneuf wasn't on the ice either time Nash scored.

So torts strategy to keep Nash away from Phaneuf worked.

I don't think "scared" is the appropriate term when you're trying to get an ideal matchup. Regardless, I can't say I've seen Phaneuf play enough to form an opinion. :O is this the first time someone's said that on HF?

he could just b pointing out the fact that he is there best dman... every coach wants their best player out against weaker competition.

General HFB opinion is that Phaneuf is over rated, and he's actually more of a number 2 D.

The article gives some pretty concrete reasons why he should be considered a top 10 D in the league.

I've watch about a dozen Rangers games, not including Leaf ones, and I have yet to see Nash get double shifted, not just once or twice but consistently all game.

He's a second pair defenseman on a good team, which is not bad at all.

This thread won't go over well here. I've brought up that Phaneuf's name in every "top defensemen" thread, only to say that he should be in any discussion about the top 10 and considered for the 6th-7th role on team Canada (not even mentioning Norris). Any such claim will always provoke a dozen replies calling you a moron and countering that Phaneuf isn't even top 20-30.

HFBoards is just a big circle jerk of prejudice. It will take YEARS for a player like Phaneuf who's already been written off to earn the respect he deserves.

Phaneuf is easily our MVP this year. Without Phaneuf we are not in a playoff spot. People talk about how good Franson and Fraser have been but Phaneuf is MILES better. He plays against the other teams top players every game with an inferior defensive partner. He has been an absolute stud. Carlyle and a decent goalie (Reimer) are showing that Phaneuf is one of the best defensemen in the NHL.

As a Leaf fan I couldn't be more pleased. Burke stole a guy for free who is turning into a very solid #1 D for us. I wouldn't say he's in the Norris running but he's been playing great on both sides of the puck. Wish he wasn't captain but it is what it is now and I wouldn't hesitate to extend him at his current contract. If only we had a solid #2 so we wouldn't have to rely on him so much and have a steady partner for him rather than the AHL level of D we've had rotating through on his other side.

inb4 "caveman" iq level comments and how he is a cancer to every team

No, Dion Phaneuf sucks. He's a third pairing defenseman on a good team. He has fallen off offensively since his rookie season and he's a pylon defensively. It's a travesty that he is a captain, he has an IQ of 10 (I personally counted it). His girlfriend is too short too.

He's a joke.

Toronto is a good team and he is a Number 1. He is a first pairing defender (either #1 or 2) on every team in the nhl.

This is exactly what I mean.

Phaneuf is a first pairing shut down defenseman on any team in the league, easily. He's played the majority of this season with a career AHLer as his defense partner for crying out loud (either Holzer or Kostka), and still manages to shut down the other team's top line.

Truly, anybody that says Phaneuf can not be a team's number one defenseman is simply just a Leafs-hater. He is definitely a top 20 defenseman in this league. I wouldn't call him one of the better 1D's in the league, but he definitely is a number one.

With that said though, I don't think anybody should be putting him and the word Norris in the same sentence. He is not that good defensively, I've watched a lot of his games this season, he just isn't that good. He's big, strong and can throw a mean body check, but positionally he needs some work. He's also a -2, has 42 giveaways and 9 takeaways. He's tied for most giveaways in the league.

He's been pretty good for the Leafs. He should be at his best in the playoffs. We'll see.
