Malkin vs Ovechkin (at draft)

simple question:

If you were Washington and you could redo the draft, would you still go ahead and choose Ovechkin over Malkin?

Ovechkin had the greatest peak, arguably since Mario Lemieux. I'd still take Ovechkin. I don't think it was ever NOT close.

As a Penguins fan I still say Ovechkin. Malkin is great, one of the best in the league. However, AO is one of the greatest snipers to ever play the game and is extremely marketable and that kind of cash from an ownership standpoint is huge. He is doing good right now and has had to deal with a lot of coach turnover. Their team has some holes and one of them is not him... if he gets a good off season behind him he can come back and win the Hart, Pearson, Art Ross, and Rocket Richard next year. It's close, but if I was Washington I would still take #8.

It's close, but the only argument I see for Malkin over Ovechkin is his postseason success (cup+smythe).

However I think it could be easily argued that Ovechkin never had as strong teams as Malkin for the playoffs so it's understandable that he doesn't have a cup and a smythe.

Ovechkin, but it's close.

I woulnd.

He is more talented than Malkin and was the better player, but his game slipped off drastically and isn't near the player he once was.
But even if Malkin is better player today by far, Ovetshkin has a underrated talent of not getting injured, so while per game contributions aren't on the same level, he contributes every game.

But if next couple of years Ovetshkin regresses and Malkin gets couple more Art ross then its no brainer.

Stupid poll choices.

Ovechkin is still the clear choice. The only right answer. It is not AINEC. It just ot what it is.

As a Caps fan I still take Ovie. It was close on draft day and it's still close today.

Both of these guys are still relatively young, so the next 5 years will determine who the better career player is. Right now it's Ovie, in part due to durability.

Ovechkin, he's marketable too and that sometimes gets overlooked. Also never seems to get injured.

I think we would view Malkin's marketability a lot more differently if it wasn't for a certain #87 on his team.

Imagine if Malkin was playing on a team like the Kings, Rangers, or Bruins. He would be marketed through the roof. He has the personality to go with it too, it's just that Crosby casts an extremely long shadow.

I still can't get that 65 goal Ovechkin out of my head. Even if the Caps will never get to see that again out of him, it's still worth it. The most dynamic player I have ever seen.

This is team game after all. I would never want coach killer like Ovechkin in my team.

Edit. put Malkin in SE and he would have peaked 150 points at least

The '09 Penguins weren't that good, Ovechkin has played on much better teams than that.

i thought about that, but I don't think malkin has the right type of personality for that, at least not compared to ovi. Malkin's not shy or anything, but ovi is larger than life in a way malkin will never be imo

Still Ovechkin. You replace Ovechkin with Malkin and the Capitals aren't any worse or better than they were since they drafted him.

Ovechkin is also a much more marketable player.

Capitals have never had a defense and when they did it was at the expense of moving forwards past center ice (Hunter hockey).

Ovechkin had better personal stats at his peaking but to me there's no question who's always been the most effective hockey player between Eugene and OV.

Without Malkin Pittsburgh doesn't win the Stanley Cup in 2009, it's simple as that.

Oveckin is creation of todays hype rock start mentality, if you want to win hockey game you take Malkin 10/10. Both him and Stamkos are totally liabilities 2/3 of hockey ring. Yes the stats are nice but hockey is much more than that.

The votes are convincing me, once again, that Malkin is a top 10 most underrated players on HF.

The correct answer is Alexander Ovechkin.

Malkin has missed 75 games the last 4 seasons combined. I don't like injury prone players even if they are productive.

Not to mention, Ovechkin is regaining his dominance again. Above all, I can actually count on him to be healthy.

Just for the record, Washington wouldn't have made the playoffs the last however many years without Ovechkin.

Jeff Shultz was their number 2 dman in 09. . .
