Chasing History: Tanner Glass

A buddy of mine did some quick research on NHL players to have played at least 48 NHL games without a single point in NHL history. There aren't many, so what Glass is working on this season is quite remarkable. Clearly, this is why Disco Dan continues to play him. How can you sit down greatness? How can you stop a potential streak like this? Would Glen Sather have sat Wayne Gretzky before setting the record for most consecutive games with at least a point? Of course not. Well, this is exactly the same (in reverse):

Raitis Ivanans (Cgy) - 61 GP, 0-0-0, -8, 136 PIM ('09-10)
Tyler Wright (Pit) - 61 GP, 0-0-0, -2, 90 PIM ('98-99)
Eric Boulton (NJ) - 51 GP, 0-0-0, -12, 115 PIM ('11-12)
Matthew Spiller (Phx) - 51 GP, 0-0-0, -11, 54 PIM ('03-04)
Jay Caufield (Pit) - 50 GP, 0-0-0, -6, 175 PIM ('91-92)
Vern Ayres (New York Americans) - 48 GP, 0-0-0, 97 PIM ('32-33)
Jack McVicar (Montreal Marroons) - 48 GP, 0-0-0, 28 PIM ('31-32)

So, maybe the reason Pittsburgh fans aren't more up in arms about this is because they've witnessed this sort of history twice before!

Will Glass join this elite group? Stay tuned folks. Because all you have to do is watch the games...you KNOW #15 will be in the lineup, chasing down a piece of history.

Going to be 3 Pens on that list soon. Kelly Buchberger was really close to doing it as well. Think he went 60 or so games with no points and then picked up 3 or 4 in the last dozen games, think his only goal was an empty netter.

Always surprised that Wright was on that list since he was not an awful offensive player.

To be fair to Jay, those early 90's Penguin teams weren't exactly lighting up the score board.

I will not use a smiley for that comment. I won't.

Wow. Caufield got his name on the cup though, so if Glass is what it takes to be like the 92 Pens, I'm for it!

This reminds me of a discussion I had with some friends during college.

If - every time Sid stepped on the ice - a metal post materialized itself (~8" in diameter, placed ~1 ft. away from the top right corner of the crease), how many points would it get over the course of an 82 game season? The debate was always +/- 8 points...

POINT WATCH!!!!

We now go live to the Pens game where Glass will do all he can to avoid getting a point. He'll slowly amble into the offensive zone, lose easy battles for the puck and bury shots safely into the goalies waiting pads. Tannger Glass will not be...WILL BE denied!!

But also Jay was also kicking the stuffing out of people from time to time. Did Scotty Bo really sit any young talent instead of him?

It really is bordering on a fireable offense with the way he manages his lineup for a couple of years now, and his mustrust if not downright dislike of greener players in favor of inferior more experienced ones.

Hah -- very good.

You've just described Warren Young. And with Lemieux the answer was 72.

It's interesting how some guys can even make this league and then somehow wind up playing with the Penguins. If he gets a point, he better keep the puck for his mantel because I don't think he'll be around long.

How dare you?

Beau Bennett's time is the future. Tanner Glass' time is now. Dan Bylsma's lineup card is merely a cipher through which history flows.

I'm sure I'm overreacting like I tend to do with this subject, but Bylsma just pisses me off to no end with this ****, and it's really getting old.

He's on his, what? Third? One-way contract now. Apparently some very good NHL teams see something most of us don't.

Maybe he's funny.

if he gets only 1 pt i'll be pissed.

It will also be funny to consider his projections for next year, as he "amortizes" for lack of a better word, toward 1 and maybe 2 points.

Oh I know, but that doesn't mean he should just ignore who the best players are on his team and dress inferior ones. It's not like these players he's sitting haven't busted their ass while they were in the lineup trying to stay.

Did any of those guys kill penalties? I think not!!!

This goes back to my BAD Vs. USELESS argument. There's a subtle difference but I'll ask again. Is Glass a BAD hockey player, or just a useless one?

Seriously, I think a few of us on this board, given regular 4th line minutes, would have an assist or two by accident.

Is it racist to say our canadian brothers would?

All I know is if come playoff time Glass scores a huge goal for us (throw Kennedy in there too) I'll be quite happy with his having taken up space during the regular season. Maybe DB sees the future?

I'd literally rather have Steve ****ing MacIntyre right now over him, and I hated Steve ****ing MacIntyre.

I get that, and I like Bennett, Despres, and Bortuzzo a lot, but I don't really understand being so upset about it with a team that's having a good year. Especially when sheltering each of them is understandable.

Because all of those players are better than other players on the roster. You should field the best lineup, not the most experienced all the time. Also Glass being in over Vitale is almost criminal.
