Giants trade Matt Robinson to Regina for Dustin Slade

Giants trade Robinson for feisty Regina Pats goalie Slade

It appears that the Marek Schwarz days are over with the Vancouver Giants, considering the Dustin Slade days are about to begin.

There's a trade embargo in the WHL until Thursday morning, but the Giants will announce a deal then that sees them pick up netminder Slade from the Regina Pats for speedy winger Matt Robinson.

Maybe Schwarz to Saskatoon now then?

The Blades both a new goalie and another import. We'll see.

I'm not sure that anything is certain yet regarding Schwarz's plans, so this could be just an insurance deal. If Schwarz does stay, they won't deal him, they would likely try to flip Slade. Robinson wasn't a good bet to stick as an overager anyway, and Slade wasn't likely to go back to Regina, so the trade makes sense for both sides. If Schwarz does go, I'd like to see someone (maybe an overager?) brought in to compete with Slade for the number one job, with Sexsmith being the backup.

Nothing is 100% certain just yet, however all indications point to Schwarz returning to Europe. That is why the deal for Slade was made. I don't see the Giants trying to acquire an overager goalie just yet. They have been watching and scouting Slade since he started playing with Surrey and I guess they feel confident that he can stay focused and that his past problems are behind him. Let's hope so.

If he can play as good as he did for Surrey down the stretch and in the playoffs, then he will lead the Giants to first place in the BC division.

Hopefully. But I agree with the basic point of your post. Slade played extremely well for Surrey. I was flat out impressed. Especially after what I saw of Slade with Regina.
