On if the league has considered expanding to Seattle…
Well, there’s good major junior tradition there, there’s a lot of interest. There’s potential of a good west coast rivalry with Vancouver. But the threshold issue, before we can really seriously consider Seattle, would be whether or not there’s a building coming out of the ground. Key Arena is inadequate, and Chris Hanson, who’s the one controls the rights to build a building, is focused on an NBA team. So, until the building issue is one that we can understand better and be told that there’s a realistic possibility of the building coming out of the ground anytime soon, that’s not something that we can seriously consider.
Bettman is impossible to read.

I can't see Vegas as the TV market is tiny compared to other options.

42 Las Vegas TV homes 726,010
13 Seattle-Tacoma TV homes 1,847,780

Just to be accurate, he said that cap will probably be 1 or 2M lower than the initial 71M estimate, so in fact, will be going up about 5-6M from this year's value.

NHL needs to renegotiate their tv deal and be less dependent on gate sales before they think of expanding tbh.

So, because of one article several months ago where Lombardi said they were told it could be as low as $68M, you've chosen to believe that number over Bettman's more current estimates. So, right now, you think Bettman is lying because months ago, he stated a possible lower value without any clue as to what conditions would be needed for the cap to be as low as $68M.

Just have to wait 6 more years for a new contract in the US. It probably won't be much better then anyway - certainly not enough to be less dependent on the gate. It's a gate-driven league - that will never change.

It might be a lot better as the NHL will have FS1 to bid on it along with NBC but in any event that can't happen until 2021-2.

Now if only seattle gets their arena figured out to where NHL team builds it NHL can gain $$$ on the next US tv contract

how much of an impact do the playoffs have on the cap? If the final 4 ends up Rangers, Habs, Hawks, and Kings, would that not affect HRR positively?

It would, but not significantly. Every extra $1m in revenue represents an extra ~$16k on the midpoint, or ~$19k on the upper limit. To get an extra $1m on the cap, you need an extra $54m. I don't think those 4 teams would necessarily bring in an extra $54m over Pittsburgh, Boston, Minnesota, Anaheim. I'd be surprised if it was an extra $10m.

And to bring even $10m, you would need all current series and every single serie all the way to finals included to end in 7.

Cripes...by that time half of the sports channels that exist now could be gone or in a different format.

I still think expansion will happen, probably by 2018 IMO.

Im thinking 2016/17 coinciding with the 100th Anniversary of the NHL. Hard to say. The timing important as it starts to play into business issues revolving around a new CBA and the beginning of another round of negotiations pursuant to broadcasting contracts, what the landscape looks like in Phoenix & possibly Florida, whether or not Gary Bettman retires and who the new Commissioner might be etc.

Why would you negotiate with the current number of TV households in the league's DMAs, when you can negotiate after adding another metro area or two?

I'd guess that it trends the other way: There's twice as many sports channels as before.

I think he said if 'There was a realistic possibility of an arena in Seattle, then we can move process forward'.
