You can forego year(s) of eligibility to sign as a free agent? News to me. Very weird. But for that to happen, I would certainly think the upside is more than just an AHL stopgap - correct me if I'm wrong. This seems quite proactive for it to just be Amerks-for-life kind of thing.

Forego years of NCAA eligibility. Same thing like the NFL and NBA. Players can sign with an NHL team at any time after their draft status is up, I believe its 3 years.

I know what foregoing eligibility means, obviously. Was just not sure how common it is for a guy to do so when he wasn't property of a team already.

Not the jewel of the college undrafteds, but seems like a good pick-up.

Sure, eligibility is irrelevant. I forget the exact rules but you come up for the draft in your first year, if you aren't drafted you go in the next. That's the end of it afaik, maybe you go in a 3rd time but I don't believe so. Either way, NCAA eligibility is irrelevant. NCAA eligibility (or at least going to the NCAA in the first place) has (or had in the old CBA) an effect on how long a team holds your rights before you ahve to be signed, but that's only relevant if a team actually holds your rights.

A guy on another site reported this afternoon the Sabres had signed a college FA dman but didn't have the name. Said Sabres source told him he would play with the Sabres and that no Rochester D would be called up to replace Myers. If true and so far the guy was right, then this is Myers' replacement for the last 7 games.

Oh god I hope not...bigger jump to the NHL from the NCAA than it is from the A, competition-wise.

That'd help the tank, though.

This will be a two year ELC, if anyone was wondering.

Selling points to get college free agent to sign with your team:
1. We have a spot in the NHL lineup right away.
2. Play one game this season and burn a year of your ELC.

Sabres are building for next year, so why not? McNabb is hurt and seems like Schiestel, Crawford and Biega (UFA) are not in their immediate (next season) NHL plans.

It is common enough.

the issue is do i want to make money and how much money would I get to fore go 1 or 2 yrs of NCAA eligibility to turn pro. But it is probably a little easier to do it if a team has your rights.

They also may feel they have accomplished everything at that level and now want new challenges.

His is a little unique and risky because a team did not own is rights. You may not be sure if you have a job waiting for you. i think there is some sort of middle man that does the communication between player and team.

What I recall reading somewhere was McCabe possibly wanting to do a full 4 yrs in college which then means Buffalo has 30 days to negotiate when his season ends before he would become a free agent.

I am not all that worried---i have seen a few college players make the jump around this time.

Given what we have seen so far this year I am sure he will fit right in.

How common? How many guys in the last five years have foregone NCAA eligibility to sign as a free agent after going undrafted? Obviously Dekeyser and Sustr. Gilroy was a senior. Schultz deregistered.

I guess it happens more than I realized, though. Definitely.

I just thought most of the free agents signed after their senior years. Guess I'm wrong there!

Seems a little small to be a defensive defenseman....clearly doing things right, though. Recognized quite prominently for his defense, per the reports I read and the accolades received.

Why can't they just bring up McNabb? Is he injured?

edit: BTW Brennan has 7 points for the Panthers...compared to his 1 here.
