Charlottetown QMJHL (PEI Rocket) getting city financial support; new owners too

Quote:
A group of investors from Charlottetown that have yet to be named publicly reached an agreement in principle with the Savard family last week to purchase the team.

After some fast and furious negotiations, the new team owners received formal support Friday from the City of Charlottetown.

Council voted to recommit to providing funding of $42,000 for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey team as contained within the approved 2013 city budget.
Plus $5k for new signage at rink. And in exchange for putting Charlottetown in the name, the city plans to spend $75k over the next two years for "promotional purposes".

Supposedly the team name was changing to Islanders from Rocket for the 2013-14 season.

The $5,000/$75,000 is not a lot given some Quebec Midget AAA municiple commitments.

Interesting to see who has the arena naming rights and the arena restaurant and/or "pouring" rights.

IIRC the QMJHL gave the rocket some sort of ultimatum to get a new owner and their financial house in order or else they'd move, right?

That's right, the league gave them an offer of 3.5 million along with a dealine for the local group to matc until April 26 (last week). Only about 10 days notice beforehand.

Otherwise, the league had an offer from a group that would have moved the team to Sorel-Tracy.

Got me. I know that they were changing their name to the Prince Edward Island Islanders (because redundancy is fun!), but not sure if that's on hold with all this.

As posted in a previous link, post #2, the name change is to Charlottetown Islanders. Hence the city's interest in spending additional dollars.

Oh, honestly missed that. Knew that the P.E.I. Islanders won the fan vote/team decision when the name change was first suggested. Charlottetown Islanders is a significantly better name.

As a former resident and fan of PEI's lone pro team (at the time), this is great to hear. Why they kept the Rocket name for so long escapes me, and hopefully it'll get folks coming to the CCC

I kept holding out for the Prince Edward Islanders myself, but Charlottetown is sounds much better than what they were going to go with.

It sounds as if they'll have the unveiling soon.
