Since most of us have already watched the scene, I've got a minor question for those of you who've read the books. In the novel, doesn't Robb kinda botch Karstark's execution? I believe he had to hack away at him a few times. I'm guessing it was his first execution.

If Edmure didn't screw up, Robb would have outsmarted the Lannisters again, although I think he should have told his uncle about his plans and not think he'd be capable of figuring it out himself
It was actually a bit of a guess. If you take in to account the decades of experience in battle both of them have, it would make sense to claim this. On top of this, both are shown and depicted as hardy battle tested lords.

Does it bother anyone else that the no one in the north (meaning beyond the wall) wears a hat? I realize they all have bushy hair and beards, but still.

A small nitpick on an otherwise great show.

That has literally never once came into my mind. Of all the tiny nitpicks, that's got to be the oddest.

Roughly half his force should be dead, wounded, missing or something gone home because, damn it, winter IS coming and harvest time is now.

Probably more, considering there has been a year of war. The Kar-starks are a sub-branch of the Stark family. Perhaps not quite apart of the house itself but very near it. And in essence one of the most very loyal (there may only be one more loyal House in the North....).

Considering their loyalty and attrition, 2,000-3,000 men going home (and also remember Lord Karstark lost both of his beloved sons to the Lannisters, he is not going to accept his men shirking and going to gather the harvest, this war is personel to him) would be a substancial remnant of Rob's army.

Also, what they have done a bad job of explaining and only mentioned in passing is that the Greyjoy's hold Moat Cailin-which is perched exactly at the neck seperating the North and the rest of the Realm. Thereby limiting reinforcements to nil.

To get home Robb Stark must besiege and take Moat Cailin-or his army will cease to be an army at all.....

2,000-3,000 men may not be exactly half of his force, but it is most of his reliable manpower and he isn't getting any replacements while the Greyjoys hold Moat Cailin and other scattered parts of the North.

Yeah that's basically what I'm saying. Started with 20,000 men, 18,000 after the diversion, then let's say down to 15,000 after further attrition through battles. Karstark and Bolton probably have around 2000-3000 each, so leaving Bolton in Harrenhall at most the Karstark's desertion would be maybe 1/4 of the remaining northern army (not counting the Riverlands), realistically it's probably more like 1/5th-1/6th. A major loss but it isn't losing half his army.

I'm interested on how he's going to convince Frey on supporting him with his army after he broke his vow to him to marry his daughter?

I wonder if offering him Castle Rock as a prize could be in order?

And what's Tywin going to do with the Sansa and Tyrion marriage once he finds out that Robb's taken or looking to take CR away from him?

Can't wait to hear that dialogue.

Wasn't there a scene in season 2 where, I can't remember who it was, took like 3 or 4 chops to take somebodies head? I think it was at Harrenhal but am probably mistaken.

There's literally no advantage to marrying Catelyn. No lands to be gained and even if there were she's too old to produce any heirs.

Yes actually this is something of a pet peeve of mine because it always happens in TV and movies. I'm a burly northernman, I can handle -30C weather with nothing on my legs but a single pair of jeans. Your ears though? I can tell when it hits -1C through the feeling in my ears, and -5 to -10C weather and I can go maybe 10-20 minutes before they start to freeze and really begin to hurt. Your feet, hands, and ears are your basic extremities that will get cold first and must be kept warm. You're feet are usually covered by default and hands can go in pockets, but in Hollywood land you always see people wandering about in blizzards with not only nothing on their heads but their hands also bare and out in the cold.

This is where you're making the mistake of assuming that the Karstarks make up the same portion of Robb's army as everyone else. They're by far the largest of his banners.

Everybody in his army knows that he's married though, so I doubt they could keep it a secret, let alone lie about it, right?

I suppose he could lie about it though...but I just don't see that as the most realistic option, unless Frey has absolutely no clue about what's going on around him of course, but he doesn't seem that ignorant.

Doesn't bribing him with lands and other titles seem like the best and easiest option? Maybe it's just me.
