Force majeure: Cancellation of Boston game(s) UPD2: Pens/B's rescheduled for Saturday

MOD NOTE: This thread is to discuss the issues relating to a "force majeure" cancellation of the 4/15 Ottawa @ Boston game, not the horrendous incident that precipitated the call for cancellation. (Head over to the Lounge to discuss the incident)

bruce_arthur 1:29pm via Web If the NHL lets the Bruins game happen tonight, they will regret it whether or not anybody gets hurt.

ESPNJoeyMac 1:14pm via Twitter for iPhone
Bruins players have not been told either way whether game is on or not. Preparing to play at this point.

GlobeKPD 1:08pm via TweetDeck Word here at Garden, AT THE MOMENT, is that Bruins-Sens will play.

StacyLymber 1:16pm via TweetDeck
Agree with my hockey Tweeps. Please cancel the #Bruins / Sens game tonight @NHL. #respect

GlobeKPD 1:13pm via TweetDeck
As for my opinion (2 cents or less)....I would NOT play the game. Subway service interrupted. Grief in streets palpable.

CouchTarts 1:16pm via TweetDeck
Guys, lay off the NHL. It takes a lot of work to cancel a game. Let them figure it out. MUCH bigger issues are clearly apparent today.

I think they will cancel the game.

The only way they will allow it is if an army of police officers is allocated to run security of the game. Can they comb the TD Garden? Can they set up security checkpoints to get people in?

Also, the T is down, so the game will be poorly attended anyway.

seangentille 1:43pm via Web OK: Bruins-Sens has reportedly been postponed. It's less than 2 miles from the site. aol.sportingnews.com/nhl/story/2013…

wyshynski 1:43pm via TweetDeck Of course, soon as I get on 980 to say Bruins game is still on, reports are that it'll be postponed via ESPN Boston *******/117UiJU

And considering the possibilities of additional devices in/around TD Garden, with only a couple of hours before puck drop, that's really hard to break off police/officials to check the area in a timely manner to ensure safety (while continuing to investigate initial incident).

Its probably more reasonable to postpone the game.

Ottawa is not on the other side of the continent and security forces got lots things to do.

Police Commissioner on CNN right now. Calling for folks **not** to congregate in large groups.

(Another reason to postpone game.)

Certainly a snowstorm or something like that. Probably last season.

This season. Hurricane Sandy. Some games in NJ/NYI/NYR had to be rescheduled. (And perhaps Boston too)

Many years ago the Sharks had to cancel a game due to flooding (arena is close to river that was in flood stage).

This is the second Bruins game postponed this year. They were supposed to play Tampa on 2/9 but it was postponed due to a snowstorm.

Postponement sounds like the best-there's just too much going on there right now with security, and the request to not congregate in large groups.

If they can't play later in Boston, the NHL faces 2 choices...
  1. Play a neutral site game. Philadelphia had to play the tail-end of their 1967-1968 season at the Colisee in Quebec, due to wind damage to the Philadelphia Spectrum.
  2. Cancel the game altogether. NHL standings tie-breaking procedures include the possibility of a team playing fewer games. See "Tie-Breaking procedure" at http://www.nhl.com/ice/standings.htm...d=nav-stn-conf

The fewer number of games played (i.e., superior points percentage).
This has top priority amongst tie-breaking procedures.

The Garden would be a pretty obvious target. It's the smart thing to cancel the game and re-schedule it later.

so boston plays every second day for the rest of the season. That means the only option is to make the B's play 3 games in 3 nights, right?

Ottawa plays on the alternating nights, strangely. The next night ottawa and boston are both off is Wednesday the 24th. Boston plays in philly the night before and vs tampa in boston the night after.

Maybe they could make it the last game of the season? Like on Sunday the 28th?

Would it be possible?

Assuming that's correct, they could decide to extend the season by 1 day and play the game on Sunday the 28th. Both teams play the Saturday before but neither play the Friday night so that wouldn't create a 3 in 3.

Anyone see another solution?

someone posted this on the sens board:

April 15 Boston Bruins vs. Ottawa Senators POSTPONED
April 16 Ottawa Senators vs. Carolina Hurricanes
April 17 Boston Bruins vs. Buffalo Sabres
April 18 Ottawa Senators vs. Washington Capitals
April 19 Boston Bruins vs. Pittsburgh Penguins
April 20 Ottawa Senators vs. Boston Bruins
April 21 Boston Bruins vs. Florida Panthers
April 22 Ottawa Senators vs. Pittsburgh Penguins
April 23 Boston Bruins @ Philadelphia Flyers
April 24 -
April 25 Boston Bruins vs. Tampa Bay Lightning, Ottawa Senators @ Washington Capitals
April 26 -
April 27 Boston Bruins @ Washington Capitals, Ottawa Senators vs. Philadelphia Flyers

so your options are the 24th, 26th, or 28th. At this point, i'm leaning towards sunday the 28th, because:

the NBA playoffs first round goes from the 20th to the 6th. Boston is going to be a lower seed. That means home games for the celtics will likely be on the 24th and 26th (and ~30th if they go to 6 games).

And TD Garden is available that day as well.

The playoffs don't start till the 30th, so there would be a day in between the playoffs and the end of the regular season.

I'm not sure how this applies to making up postponed games, but I'm pretty sure teams are not allowed to play three nights in a row, so there it looks like the 28th is the only option.

or... the NHL could move the lightning-bruins game to April 26th, and have the Bruins-Senators game on the 24th. This would prevent 3 in 3's, and keep the original end date intact.
