Has anyone told Bozak that April Fool's has come and gone already?

Is this Tyler Bozak? Hopefully there's another Bozak in the league that somehow I'm unaware of, and actually deserves anywhere near $5+.
If Tyler, then

Definitely not what I was getting at. I said "against top defensive matchups" (i.e. against top shut-down forwards and checking lines).

I can't help but post this again. I suggest everyone go and read it.
I'm absolutely not arguing that he's the ideal fit for the 1st line, or that I'd want to pay him $5M. That being said, I have no doubt that, with the poor free agent class this year and precedents set by similar UFAs in recent years, that there'd be teams willing to pony up $5M for him...at least on a short-to-medium length contract.

As it stands now though, I'm not sure where the Leafs would find a vast improvement on Bozak. Do they really want to overpay for Ribeiro or Roy and hope that they work out? If they could magically find that #1 centerman, then I'd be perfectly happy with them offering Bozak $3.5-4M as a 2nd/3rd line option who can play on the PP or PK, and then using an amnesty buy-out on Grabovski. And if he turns it down, or Leafs management would rather pay Grabo $5.5M to play on the 3rd line, then that works too.

However, there's no one in this years UFA class that would offer a serious upgrade and who would be worth entering that FA bidding war over and I seriously doubt that the Leafs are going to find a team willing to trade a quality #1 center. More likely, they sign Bozak to a 3-4 year deal and ease Kadri into that top line role.

Additionally, not to say that your source isn't useful (it definitely raises a lot of good points), but it's from February 16th and refers to the last two seasons, when the Leafs were a 22nd and 26th place team respectively. This year, the year that will be most pertinent to any contract talks, the Leafs are sitting in 7th overall and, like it or not, Carlisle has relied on Bozak quite heavily this season in all aspects of the game.

He is worth around the ballpark of 4 mil at best, anything over that is overpayment and if he gets 5 mil, I hope it certainly not with us.

Likely teams interested in adding a 2nd line center.

Weiss, Bozak, Roy and Ribiero all likely get 5+, potentially 6+ for 1 or 2 of them, with term. It's not like a guy like Weiss had a great year either, but he'll still rake in 5+ with term, most likely. If you're comfortable with handing those contracts out as a GM, I don't understand why you wouldn't trade for one at the right price.

Not to mention under the new CBA Toronto could retain some of his salary, say $1M to bring it down to a more manageable $4.5M.

One of those guys is not like the others. Bozak won't get 5+ unless a GM loses his mind.

Zajac is an alright comparable, obviously it isnt perfect. Grabovski isnt bad either, if you ask me, I dont want to be signing come UFA time.

Kesler`s been too injured to play up to his contract for a couple of years now. And Bozak`s nowhere near healthy Kesler.

I could see Dallas taking a run at him.

GM Joe helped recruit him to Toronto, Dallas needs a decent 2nd line C and has a lot of cap to work with.

I personally don't think he's worth 5 million but I'm sure someone will.

I think he is only worth 3.xxx but will end up getting around 4.500-ish

If it's one year, who cares.. even two... but if it's a Leino-esque contract... that team will regret it.

You can never underestimate how desperate a GM can be on July 1st. Funny how we always seem to forget that. Insanity rules.

He's right to ask for $5MM. It's too high, sure, but someone will give him north of $4MM, even if that's overpayment.

But he's got a few good centermen who are likely to be higher on team's wishlists:

- Roy
- Weiss
- Ribiero

Guys like MacDonald, Koivu and Cullen might be more attractive to contending teams who have limited cap space for longer term deals as well.

It's a tough spot for the Leafs. They're just beginning to emerge from the crater they were in, and can't tie up too much in "lesser" core players. A lot of teams tend to overpay for these types of players and regret it later. This is where they need some "buy-in" but it doesn't appear that Bozak is very altruistic.

Ok suppose he walks....

Then we have a huge problem...we need 2 centers now...no one in FA....

Kessel 1year away from FA and likely no centre for him to play with...

Even if we let him walk we have Grabo, McClement, sign Kadri, and I have a feeling Colborne will be staying up on the leafs next year.

He will have fun getting 30 points a year in Calgary until Feaster finally gets canned and the new GM immediately buys him out.

Bozak is a nice versatile player but when we start talking captain Shawn Horcoff money for him it's a little bit too much.
