Detroit Re-Signs Jimmy Howard [6 year/$5.3 M per]

Aaron Ward ‏@aaronward_nhl 4m
Sounds like Detroit Red Wings and Jimmy Howard are on the verge of coming to terms on a 6 year deal paying in the range of 5.3 M per #TSN

I`ll never trust an Aaron Ward story again, ha ha.

Doesn`t it seem a bit high for Howard?

Is he deserving of that term and dollar?

I don't know. It seems to me that he's a number 1 G, but he's not in the upper echelon of number 1s. If Detroit fans are happy with this, though, I guess I'm happy for them.

No he's not, I'll hate this deal if it's true.

The money would be ok if it was for 3-4 years but 5.3 for 6 years is just gross considering Mrazek is 2-3 years away and Howard is good not great.

I'm thinking Wing fans won't be happy with the term or dollar. Probably hoping for something between 4-4.5 on a 4 or 5 year deal.

To be fair, he was right about there being a deal and what the pieces of the deal were. It's not like he went full-Eklund.

Doesn't Holland know whats in the pipeline??? Mrazek is going to be a great goaltender in the NHL. The term is what confuses me on this deal.

Salary is fine, but not at at term. We've got Mrazek in the pipeline.

Would be happy with 5.3 for 4 years.

Solid deal for a solid goalie. I don't think it's too high. Depends on how you value Howard I guess, I think he's a top 10 goalie for sure.

Considering how much Detroit likes to overripe their prospects before giving them a full-time chance in the NHL, Holland probably feels Mrazek needs six more years of seasoning.

Recently signed comparables within the last year:
Quick about to start a contract at a $5.8M hit.
Lehtonen about to start a $5.9M hit.
Schneider in a $4M hit contract.
Pavelec in a $3.9M.

Considering there isn't a long-term option on the UFA market, this isn't a bad deal.

Called UFA leverage. What other options does Detroit have. Let him walk and rely on UFA or trade to get another goalie? You'll be in line with several other for trade and UFA you'll have to overpay a goalie just as bad if they choose to go.

Mrazek isnt ready.

Obviously bad deal for Detroit, but call a spade a spade, hands were tied.

Ah, yes. Mrazek the gauranteed super star. Na, Holland doesn't know what is in his own pipeline. "Who did I draft again?"

Mrazek looks like a steal so far but goalies prospects are ridiculously unpredictable and is Mrazek a for sure stud NHL goaltender like some Wings fans clearly think he is. He had a nice cup of tea for a youngster but is nowhere near a sure thing.

Always saw reimer as a howard clone. Both do well when the team is doing well... rarely steal games. That is the going rate though
