I'm no expert on Dallas hockey, but some of the games lately I have watched the stadium looked to be more than half empty.
I picked the wrong game to go to in that department (Stars vs Hawks) as it was packed half Stars fans, half Hawks fans (including myself for that 8-1 rout booya).

However, I think if Phoenix were to move here then it wouldn't be all that unsuccessful. I wouldn't care for the team because this season they did blow donkey balls until recently, but the season prior they made it to the conference final and have been in the playoffs/playoff hunt for the past few years. Not bad. I would just be so happy to get a team again (let alone an NHL team, that would just be a giant bonus)

Besides, unless Les Alexander decides Toyota Center doesn't need an NHL team either (I think Houston would be out of their minds to reject an NHL team, but we've all seen how Toyota Center feels about the Aeros), I think the NHL Houston Aeros would do just fine, given that an NHL team would get way more advertisement than an AHL team. And they would certainly get season tickets from a crap ton of AHL Aeros fans, and possibly fans of other NHL teams in the area (seen a lot of different jerseys from around the country at Aeros games :p).

But alas, there is a part deep down inside me that fears Houston will never get an NHL team, because it's a "non-traditional market".

Just imagine it if there was a team here though, instant rivalry with Dallas, and probably Minnesota as well given the fact that the Aeros used to be their affiliate. I could see those games getting pretty messy

And hell, if hockey can work in Dallas, it can most certainly work here.

So get on it NHL, either move the Coyotes here, or just make it a 32 team league, with the addition of Houston and Seattle!

Wasn't there some talk about bringing Quebec an NHL franchise soon also? I could have sworn I'd seen something to that effect?

Good idea...should get a Granlund alternate White Aeros sweater!

Could not agree more. I grew up in St. Paul and went to school in Des Moines, and I always told people how much they reminded me of each other. Nice, compact downtown and the Court Ave. bar district is just a couple blocks from the arena. I will definitely be making the trip to catch a game or two. It's a fun town if you give it a chance. I have my reservations about DSM as a hockey town, and I was always a little taken aback by how they all seem to jump on Chicago bandwagons even though the Twin Cities are considerably closer, but hopefully the Wild can still get a decent following.

Also, not to nitpick, but it's more like 3 and half hours from St. Paul, maybe 3:15 if you make good time. Not a bad drive at all.

i live in Rochester which is about 70-80 minutes from ST. Paul if you obey the speed limit somewhat. i looked up the distance from Rochester to Des Moines and it was 3hrs 9 minutes which is only a 20 minute time savings from St. Paul

Houston only works for an NHL team if that's where the league is planning on moving the Coyotes when (not if, when) the latest rounds of soon-to-be failed attempts at coming up with a lease agreement end.

I dont think an expansion team would be able to get the people of Houston excited.

So, the way I see a 32 team NHL shaping up if Houston is involved:

Phoenix relocates to Houston, Colorado re-aligned to Pacific Division

Expansion teams awarded to Seattle and Quebec City.

Seattle brings the Pacific division up to 8 teams.

Quebec City is added to the Eastern Conference, necessitating that one of either Detroit or Columbus moves back to the Western Conference, and into our division. I have a feeling that most of the West is going to demand Detroit gets moved back, but I think Detroit and its 4 other O-6 buddies in the East forces Columbus to be the team that gets sent back.

Alternatively, this one in from the no-shot-in-hell department of my brain, Detroit comes back to the West, but brings Toronto with them, and Nashville gets sent east. That would be a fun division. Fantasy is fun.

Sorry, Houston Aeros fans.

Concerning proximity, this makes sense. The name kind of sucks, though.

I'll update this later, but again, 2 p.m. CT conference call by the AHL Board of Governors to approve the relocation of the Houston Aeros to Iowa and rename them the Iowa Wild.

There will be a press release soon after.

What a terrible name. How many AHL teams have the exact same name as the parent club. Just ********

“Our organization has enjoyed tremendous support from the loyal, passionate hockey fans in Houston since 2001,” Wild Assistant to the General Manager/Aeros General Manager Jim Mill said. “There is a great hockey history in Houston, beginning with the Apollos in 1965, and continuing with the Aeros in the WHA, IHL and AHL. We are honored to have been a part of this hockey tradition.”

“We were not able to find agreement on terms of a new arena lease which would allow us to continue to successfully operate our franchise. We thank Toyota Center for the partnership we’ve had since moving there in 2003,” Wild Chief Operating Officer Matt Majka said.

The Minnesota Wild wanted to stay in Houston - it just didn't work out. The proper way to leave town is to be playing hockey in June.
