If Another Early Exit Occurs, is it Time to Trade Burrows?
Yes, this is a serious thread.
Alex Burrows' new contract kicks in next season, and it concerns me. The guy's on pace for about 40 - 45 points this year, and that's playing alongside Daniel & Henrik and averaging nearly 3:00 of PP time/game. The reality is that that's not good enough. And I'm not sure it'll be getting any better at the age of 32 & beyond.
Trading Alex Burrows might be just the shakeup that this team would need - again, prefaced under the notion of another early exit (1st or 2nd round, let's say). And trading him before July 1st would allow the move to be made without an NTC impeding it. Ideally, he'd be packaged with Luongo, to help increase the marketability of Roberto, and hopefully yield a return that's far more enticing than the crap that Gillis was on his knees begging for at the deadline.
Not much of a point in throwing out proposals, as the market for goaltenders in the summer could be volatile, but I just thought I'd begin the discussion. Burrows' new $4.5M cap hit until 2017 is a bit of a concern given what he's produced this year, where he's at in his career, and where this team's at in its "process" to try and win a Cup.
Some very serious changes should be undertaken with another early exit, and this might be the smart one to do. Thoughts?
That's about the level of consideration I would give to trading Burrows. A bit strange as well; going from questioning whether or not our team is able to play emotionally, and then advocating dealing the player who has perhaps best risen to the occasion when stakes are high over the years.
I think the twins have zero trade value. Aqua man would even do them the courtesy to trade them for free to any team they want in the ridiculous case of them ever wanting out of vancouver.
Ryan Kesler's trade value is virtually zero as well, unless he stomped his feet whining he wanted out. If Shero took acid and called gillis up and offered us Crosby for him then and only then would Gillis go crawling on his knees to Kes.
After that, Alex Burrows is the next least likely tradeable canuck. His value to the franchise and to our fansbase is literally 5 times what his actual trade value is. If Gillis traded Burrows , there is a real possibility we could find him hanging from a tree within 72 hrs.
We threaten to trade Burrows, regardless of performance or cap hit, as punishment to the team if they fail to meet expectations.
It would really send a message if Burrows happens to be our best player this post season and we still trade him. No player would ever have an off game again because of the continuous state of fear and bewilderment they would be in.
Hey, we could also threaten their families! You know, with knives and stuff!
