Predict if we make the playoffs... with Excel

Yeah I'm bored at work. I put together an Excel spreadsheet with all the remaining games of the teams we are chasing for a playoff spot.

Simply enter a capital X in the corresponding spot of the result you think will occur for that particular game.

The point totals at the top of the page reflect your prediction. (I didn't make the order change cause that would require a macro which people may be weary of opening).

Unfortunately I see the Jets missing by 2 points.

What do you come up with?

Excel sheet here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...calculator.xls
Macro enabled version to sort standings: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...alculator.xlsm

I get the same, which is what I had been thinking as well, this is the order

WPG - 3rd
Rangers - 6th
WSH - 7th
Isles - 8th
OTT - 0.5% chance at #1 pick.

(Note: WPG, WSH, Isles all tied ordered by ROW)

I see SportsClubStats has my first round WPG - Rangers series at a 16% chance of happening.

What's killing New Jersey is their ROW count. All those OT loss points (10!) makes it really tough for them to contend. They are 4 points behind the Jets (albeit with 2 games in hand) and they don't have an easy schedule at all.

They are pretty much out IMO. Kovy coming back may change their ways a bit but I don't think he'll be enough to get them into the playoffs at this point.

As for this spreadsheet (yeah I love them too!) I will play with it at home as I can't download it at the office.

Speaking of spreadsheet fun... here are a couple stats for Friday fun... Kane needs 4 goals to reach 50 as a Winnipeg Jet and Wheeler is 4 points shy of the century mark! Lastly, Ron Hainsey has yet to score a goal as a Winnipeg Jet (note even Randy (SHUDDER) Jones nabbed one last season!

Go Jets Go!!!

As an outside observer, I think your guys best shot would be catching the Rags or Sens for 8th place. I don't see Ovie and the Caps slowing down and the Islanders are playing some really good hockey right now. You'll probably need around 52/53 points to make it, so at least four wins in your last 6 games. I hope you catch the Rags, and all four Canadian teams make the playoffs in the East. I would love for some good Canadian rivalries to develop again.

As much as I want the Jets to make the playoffs, I feel as if we will come up short and end in 9th by a point or 2.

It is looking that way for sure. 2/5 on that losing streak would have likely put us in, but them's the breaks.

I wouldn't bet on the Caps losing any games from here on in. I think our best chance is catching the Rangers or OTT. The Rangers have an easy schedule and the Isles are surging so basically the Jets need to 4-2 or 5-1 with some help.

I want to see the Jets in 8th place playing the Pens in the first round.

If they can beat the best than anything is possible.

Wow, 4 teams tied with 54 points and Wpg takes the Division by virtue of ROW (see attachment if interested).
This exercise was a hell of a lot of fun and completely biased!

Washington 54
Ottawa 54
NYI 52
NYR 54
Winnipeg 54

I couldn't agree more. In a single elimination tournament where you will almost certainly have to play the top seed (or one of the elite top seeds) at some point if you want to win, I say bring 'em on in the first round. If there's one thing that people fear more than a giant, it's a giant-killer.

Thats all fine and dandy. I'll avoid the Penguins, please and thank you.
It's great to want to be the giant killers etc. But in reality our best bet to win a playoff series, which is the goal, is to play weaker teams.

I'd hate to play the Pens on the first round. We're AWFUL most of the time against them and tend to fall in a hole when they begin to roll.

The last time this franchise was in the playoffs, they got swept by the Rangers. I think it's not that impossible we'd get swept again.

2/2 1st round sweeps would be a sad stat
