SBJ: Penguins among top-rated sports teams since ’97 (TV)

Must-see hockey: Penguins among top-rated sports teams since ’97
By John Ourand & David Broughton, Staff Writers
Published April 29, 2013, Page 1

Are this year’s Pittsburgh Penguins about to join the ranks of the most-watched American sports teams?

Heading into their final regular-season games last week, the Penguins were on pace to post the highest average RSN rating for any U.S.-based MLB, NBA or NHL team since 2002. Penguins games on Root Sports were averaging a 12.56 Nielsen rating in the Pittsburgh market, a mark that would be the highest RSN rating for any U.S.-based NHL team on record.

Since 1997, only the 2002 Seattle Mariners, who pulled a 13.2 average on FSN Northwest that year, would have a higher rating among U.S.-based MLB, NBA or NHL teams than what the Penguins were averaging as of last week, according to SportsBusiness Journal research.

Pens Tv Ratings

Thought this was interesting. Pens regional coverage has really taken off over the past couple of years.

Also, dark ages, attendance woes, blah blah blah.

I know if my team had the best and (arguably) 2nd best players in the world, I would be sure to watch too.

Not like I don't now, though.

Not sure how this is possible, didn't have a team until 2005.

it's spectacular. Too bad we dont have sportsnet/tsn-habs/tsn-jets/tva-sports/rds ratings to compare them to.

I have seen this posted numerous times by Pens fans but not a single one has ever used a credible source.

How can ratings have gone up 55% to 11.87, yet still have been greater last year than a team with a 17% increase to 10.13 this year?

I saw an article a couple of days ago that has Buffalo at about the same rating but said that the % increase was in the 40s.

Another tidbit:

Quote:
Another good story for the league occurred in Chicago, where Blackhawks games on Comcast SportsNet Chicago averaged a league-high 192,000 homes. The team has posted a viewership increase five straight seasons, growing consistently from an average audience of 21,600 homes per game in 2007-08, when Rocky Wirtz took over the team and immediately worked a deal to show the team’s home games on local TV.
SBJ should qualify the story as US-based teams' highest viewership, not the entire NHL.

Every Pens game at home sells out. Hell, pretty much every Pens game anywhere sells out.

I don't know where to find TV ratings and news sources from a decade ago. And what do I know, We're all bandwagon fans. I'll admit it, 5 year old me bandwagoned those early 90s teams hard. Then I bandwagoned Jagr, and then Kovalev, and then Lemieux came back. And now Sid and Geno. Most of us have been bandwagoning for 20 years now.

Their regional ratings have always been at the top. Even in the dark days.

Good team. Very little market competition. Cold winters with little else to do. Recipe for good ratings.

Contrary to popular belief, there was always solid fan support. Attendance was down at the games (still had as many there as Chicago who had 10X the market size) for a couple years but people were still paying attention and watching on television. You need to realize that the Penguins have a real market of 300,000 people when comparing to most markets that are in the millions.

If you really are interested in why they almost moved to KC, look up Howard Baldwin and investigate his fiasco with the finances of the Penguins.

I know this doesn't fit the narrative. It's easier and more fun to believe that the Penguins never had any fan support before Crosby.

Could say that **** about every single Canadian team.

Nvm not the "good team" part.

Absolutely. Asking someone to pay several thousand dollars to watch dog crap on ice otherwise they're 'not a true fan' is malarkey.

I watched maybe 20-30 games a year during the dark period, because I'm not a masochist. The only thing that got my interest was 'hey Fleury is playing tonight' or 'Mario is a point away from a record' or something like that. Winning was rarely a consideration.

The Penguins have been pushing and support hockey for kids for awhile now and it's reflecting in fan base. More teams should be doing this to support hockey as a whole. Too many sports teams take there fans for granted.

The team also supplies free sticks to every elementary school in the region and has begun constructing ball hockey facilities as it tries to compete with football and baseball for young athletes’ attention.

The Penguins have hired four full-time staffers, including one high-level exec in Rick Hixon – chosen executive director of strategic planning in 2010 – dedicated mainly to minor-hockey growth.
