Did You Know?
  • Happy Earth Day everyone. YouTube's logo for the day features an emperor penguin and it's chick.
  • The Penguins have already clinched the 1st spot in the Eastern Conference, which will be the first time the Penguins will play as the #1 seed since the current playoff format started in 1993-94. The Penguins have ended only one other season atop the Eastern/Wales Conference - 1992-93. This is also just the second time the Penguins will win the Atlantic Division crown despite winning the Northeast Division in 3 of the 5 seasons in it. This will be the 7th division title in team history.
  • With the #1 seed in hand this will be the Penguins' 18th trip to the postseason in the past 22 seasons (compared to 17 in 23 for a certain team in Philadelphia). In those 18 playoff trips the Penguins have an 24-15 record in playoff series.
  • If Ottawa holds on and makes it to the playoffs this will be the 14th time in the past 16 seasons to do so. The success dries up shortly after, however, as the Senators have only won 8 of 22 playoff series in that span.
  • If the Penguins face the Senators in the first round of the playoffs it will be the 4th such meeting in the past 7 seasons - all in the first round. The Senators won in 2007, while the Penguins won the tilts in 2008 and 2010.
  • On the off chance Sidney Crosby is able to hold on to win the Art Ross it will be the 15th time in the past 25 seasons that the award has gone to a Penguin. No other team has employed the winner of the award at least 10 times.
  • The Knife are a electronic band from Stockholm, Sweden formed in 1999 consisting of two members - Karin Dreijer Andersson (aka Fever Ray) and Olof Dreijer.
  • The Knife didn't embark on their first tour until 2006 (first concert in 2005) and very rarely play live gigs.
  • Equally as rare as concerts are public appearances of any sort by the band - until recently they appeared almost exclusively wearing medico della peste (plague doctor) masks.
  • In 2003 the band won a Grammi (Swedish Grammy) for their album Deep Cuts, they did not attend the award ceremony - nor would they in 2007 when they won 6 Grammis.
  • In 2010 they composed an opera (along with collaborators Mt. Sims and Planningtorock) performed by the Danish performance art group Hotel Pro Forma titled Tomorrow, In a Year, based on Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species.
  • Silent Shout won Pitchfork's 2006 Album of the Year distinction, with the title track being ranked as the 2nd best song of 2006.
  • Shaking the Habitual, The Knife's 4th studio album, was released on April 5th of this year. It is the band's first album since 2006's Silent Shout.

Without You My Life Would Be Boring

*Notably absent from the collection is the lead single from Shaking the Habitual, 'Full of Fire', which has a video featuring a frame or two of nudity (not the good kind)...regardless I suggest checking it out if the above videos appeal to you.

It's A Great Day For Hockey

Lines will be updated after the morning skate. I'm assuming Eaton will be in over Bortuzzo, I just wanted to use that image at least once this season...

since we're facing team Sweden, this is the winning jam:

The Thing: Mats Gustafsson, Ingebrigt Hεker Flaten, Paal Nilssen-Love and guest Thurston Moore

i admit it's a little rough around the edges, but i anticipate that this game is going to be a little rough around the edges.

plus Mats Gustafsson is perhaps the premier Swedish free-jazz saxophonist. wiki states he is noted for his 'his tonal belligerence and intensity when improvising'

Looking at the remaining schedules of the Sens, Rangers and Islanders.... I think if we win at Ottawa, we are pretty much setting up a 1st round clash with them.

Preferable to the Rangers in my book, but less so than the Islanders if as expected Ottawa gets Karlsson (and maybe Spezza) back. Either way, we should beat all comers so I am not really picking favorites, just interesting that if we lose, we are unlikely to see Ottawa again this year and very much the opposite if we win.

I'd really like to see us play the Jets. I think it'd be an unreal atmosphere in the playoffs--and, well, we'd roll them with zero competition.

Amazing GDT Bigs! I loved the Pens lineup pics.

Win today would make Bylsma fastest to 200 wins as an NHL coach.

The whole thing is so silly. We had Godard during that Isles game. It means absolutely nothing.

Nice GDT thread, especially the Craig Anderson pic!

I really don't see this game turning out to be the all-out war that people think it will be. The Sens know that they'll be under the microscope by the league in this game, and that any questionable behavior will lead to immediate disciplinary action. Cooke will most definitely be expected to drop the gloves though, similar to when we first played the B's after the Savard incident.

Agreed. If they're going to do anything, Mac isn't going to stop them.

I think the NHL is going to be watching the game closely though. I don't expect anything of note, maybe someone challenging Cooke but nothing like that Isles game.

I always enjoy your free jazz and literary references, Crafton.

I've seen Gustafsson and Nilssen-Love a few times over the years - not always in settings like this though. Great players nonetheless.
