I live in Syracuse now, but I grew up in a small town in eastern PA called Nazareth. Formerly, there was an auto racetrack, the Nazareth Speedway, but it closed down a year or two ago. Apparently, a local developer wants to build an arena on the site. He would like to lure an AHL team to the area.
The relevant quote:
The project centers on an 8,000-seat Monolithic Dome, so named by Monolithic Constructors Inc., the Texas company that builds it. Atiyeh hopes its primary tenant would be an American Hockey League affiliate of the New York Rangers or New Jersey Devils. He expressed confidence the sport would find a fan base in the Lehigh Valley.
For what it's worth, the Lehigh Valley (includes cities of Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton and surrounds) has about 800k people; that's about the same size as some other markets (Hershey, Syracuse, WB/S) that hold a team just fine. I think with the right marketing, it could be a success. (And what a rivalry triangle: Philly-Hershey-Lehigh Valley!)
the Nazareth Converts aka God's gift to hockey (get it?...sorry)
the Nazereth Virgins...Mary and all that
the Nazerth Sheperds
the Nazereth Homeboys...sponsored by the makers of the "Jesus is my Homeboy" hats
FINALLY! Someone smart enough to build a Monolithic Dome for an Arena. It'll cost him about 15-20 million to build the arena, plus land costs, so really there is no danger of it going under, just the question remains can the area support an AHL franchise...
Providence would be moved to play in Worcester for 2 years while they renovated the arena in Providence. Any truth to this. I would hate it. Worcester is not as close for me as Providence is. 2 years to renovate? They cant do something in the offseason? I know I heard they were gonna put in new seats and seamless glass. But nothing that would take too long.
