Would you do this?

Okay I got a crazy Idea. I know that it's so unlikely that it's not even funny but this is hfboards after all. How often to we see serious threads were we think -''yeah, I could see that happen''?

I thought this might be an very interesting thread where people could discuss the positives and the negatives. No matter what team you root for.

Okay so here we go (flame suit on)...

Would you trade 3 of Oilers big 4 for Crosby? And would you as a Pens fan think about that deal or would you dismiss it?

You could choose 3 of: RNH, Yakupov, Eberle and Hall, whatever combo you like for Crosby.

The premiss of this deal is that Malkin has signed for 5+ years in Pens.

Crosby is the best player in the league, he is older and has missed a few games the last few seasons. With that said he's still Crosby... so you'd have to really pay premium and then some in order to get Shero to even pick up the phone.

I want Oilers and Pens fan to answer this and I really look forward to more objective fans (ppl who root for teams that has got nothing to gain from this trade, IE the 28 other teams).

This is not a troll thread or anything so I hope it doesn't get locked up. Just answer yes or no and if you'd like to, write a few sentences explaining why you would/wouldn't do it if you had the chance.

Thanks, enjoy guys!

I didn't vote, but if you could keep Hall or Yak i'd do it without thinking about it. Crosby needs a winger

RNH, Eberle and Yakupov for Crosby? Oilers make that trade easily. Pens laugh.

Very tough question. Right now it's obviously worth it, but we have no idea what level Ebs/RNH/Yak/Hall will top out at. I expect a bunch of people to vote based upon right now and not project the Oilers players.

Either way, I'd probably do it if I could keep Hall. We probably still wouldn't be contenders - just so many holes elsewhere on the roster.

That could be an elite 1st line, on which all of them could be relatively near Crosby in production.

And then you have to pay them as an elite 1st line.

Well depending on who you'd take it would obvious look different. Yakupov is on his ELC so you won't have to give him a raise for a while. Crosby makes around 9 million so you can deduct that. Then you have older players like: Iginla, Morrow, Murray, Orpik who are all past their primes and making quite the amount of $.

I'm not saying that Penguins should do the trade, I'm just saying it would be doable.

Hall - Malkin - Neal
Kunitz - RHN - Yakupov

for instance or however you wanna construct the lines. Sutter, Dupuis and so on on the 3rd line. 4th line barely matters, I mean look at that team.

Then they got Martin, Letang, Depres and like 3-4 really great D prospects coming up who should be NHL ready by next season (maybe not all of them, but 1-2 of them probably). It's certainly doable.

Edit: After a reshape this could be their team.

Out: Crosby, Iginla (still a great player but he will demand a large amount of $ and you will get 2 young great wingers in the Crosby trade back) , Morrow, Murray, Orpik, Kennedy

In: Yakupov, Hall, RHN

Caphits out: $8.7M, $7M, $4.1M, $3.75M, $2.5M, $2M = $28.05M

Caphits in: $6M (Hall), $3.75, $3.75M = $13.5M

Then you call up Harrington/Maata and Pouliot. You have Benett as well on the wing who is on his ELC etc. Shouldn't be a problem for them. And in a few years the caphit is most likely going up again (it always does) so by the time they need new contracts some of the older guys will be gone and the cap is probably higher than it'll be the next season.

Hall - Malkin - Neal
Iginla- RHN - Yakupov
Kunitz-Sutter-Morrow

So...that would be their top 9?

Penguins laugh them off the phone.

Cap goes down after this season so they'd probably wouldn't resign Morrow, Murray, Orpik, Iginla (take your picks) if that trade went through.

I agree, Sidney Crosby is by far the best player in the world but why would the Edmonton Oilers do this? They already have a shallow talent pool at the NHL level and trading away 3 of their 4 best players would only make it weaker.

What happens if Crosby sustains another injury? That team will be even worse than last place..

If the Oilers trade any of their big 4 they need to look for the opposite scenario. Instead of a quantity for quality trade from their end, a quality for quantity trade coming back. Furthermore, if their trading one of their top forwards they need to bolster their defense core with a legitimate top pairing two-way guy.

Seems like a lucrative trade just for the sake of being lucrative.

IF Pitts agreed to this, Edmonton would do it. Crosby and Hall on your top line? The cap space they would have moving forward to fill out their lineup would be key moving forward. I dont think you can underestimate the impact Crosby can have on any line-up.

I would do this for the Oilers mainly for having a superstar playing in Canada and the value that the Oilers are sending for Crosby is pretty good.
What in the world would the lineups look like though? (for Edmonton)

Hall-Crosby-???
???-Gagner-???

(don't know too much about Oiler lineups)

I would even let the Pens pick which ones they wanted if I'm the Oilers. Can't rip them off too bad...

Dunno that it makes sense for either side, but especially not the Oilers. Team has a lot of talent that just needs some time to mature... only needs are really in net and the blue line. IMO

All that $$$ to resign plus what Malkin, Neal and Letang will make? No way they can afford that.

The Oilers would definitely do this but the Penguins would laugh it off.
