Montreal Canadiens 2008-09 edition

I was always wondering what happened that year? I mean the Habs finished 1st in the East the previous year. In the off-season, Gainey trades their 1st pick to Calgary for Alex Tanguay, was this a bad move or not?. We had a good team with some addition like Laraque, Tanguay, Lang, as we entered our 100th year anniversary. We we're doing well before the All-Star breaks, we were 4th in the East, and we were favorites to win the Cup. But after that nothing Price was a huge slump, the whole team wasn't playing. What could have gone wrong so that we went into a downfall?

Thanks

Injuries, Carbo losing control and Carey's red pads, Komisarek getting destroyed by Lucic, etc.

Price was a little young, got a tone of injuries, but man on paper that was a sick team.

Higgins-Saku-Tanguay
AKost-Plekanec-Kovy
Latendresse-Lang-SKost
Begin-Lapierre-Laraque

Markov-Komi
Hamrlik-O'Byrne/Brisebois
Bouillon-Gorges

They were in 1st place for most of the year, until after the All Star break when everyone got hurt.

Man going into that season everyone picked us to win the cup.

Higgins coming off a 27 goal year, the Ak Plek Kovy line was amazing the year before, Lang was a big centre that had like 20 goals before getting hurt. Saku was healthy, Komisarek was actually good, until that fight with Lucic.

IMO the only question mark going into that year was where we missing a top 4 Right Dmen to play with Hamrlik, O'Bryne and Brisebois were not suited for that role at all.

What I remember most about that year was how soft Tanguay was, he was hurt, but doctors told him, he could play and his shoulder I believe won't get worse, if he can play with the pain. He refused, Gainey was not happy about that. I remember Tanguay saying that its a contract year, and he didn't want to risk making it worse.

No one wanted to sign Tanguay that summer, even though he had a good year, I think Tampa gave him a 1 year deal at the end of the summer.

Management banked on progression from the team's younger players. The fact we didn't have many injuries the year prior didn't help in getting a fair assessment.

But we did have a fair bit of injuries. The vets we brought in were pretty damn good. Price got injured in December and never really looked like the top 5 goalie he had been for the first 30 or so games.

Barbershop jerseys happened. Everything went downhill after we wore them.

If you listen closely to what our own Grant McCagg has to say, Timmins had Carlson way higher up his list than Nemisz and would have been our pick had we not traded it.

Should've, could've, would've, guys.

Either the GM is getting criticized for standing pat and not being aggressive, or he's getting knocked for being aggressive and not standing pat.

Can't have it both ways.

How am I suppose to listen closely? Does McCagg have a weekly thread on here or somthing, or a radio show I can listen to.

But thanks for the information. I guess that sucks that we traded a first, and could have had Carlson, but I guess Gainey thought team has really close.

Even though, he should have found a way to try to get another 1st round pick for the one he traded.

Don't remind me about that game. That Lang injury was the start of a complete meltdown

Tanguay was effective when he played. Too bad he didn't play that much . I remember when Gainey put Kovy,Koviu and Tanguay on the same line and they scored 5 goals for us. Too bad Carbo didn't do that while he was coach

Didn't Latendresse start that year off pretty well playing on the top line then got demoted when players came back ?

Tanguay was great for us.

The world of 2008... The team had just finished first and in the offseason trades their 1st rounder for a 1st Line LW and then picks up the long needed big right handed centre.. who by the way, Lang played awesome here... Koivu Plekanec Lang was potentially a great set up for a one year run.

My wife was able to get me tickets. 1st Habs game I've ever seen I'm Montreal. Great seats to, 2nd about 5 seats deep into our blue line.

All I had to say was wtf and don't buy me tickets again.

I remember there was a rumor Timmins was very upset with that trade giving up 1st round for Tanguay, he had John Carlson jersey ready to go.

Timmins was also angry about Gainey giving up Mcdonagh in the Gomez trade. He said that he's happy for Ryan Mcdonagh but he was crying inside.

Imagine if we have PK Subban, Ryan Mcdonagh, John Carlson with Jarrod Tinordi and Nathan Beaulieu.

Aww

Higgins coming off a 27 goal year,
Saku was healthy
AKost coming off a 26 goal year
Plek had 29 the year before
Kovy coming off a 35 goal, 84 point season
add Tanguay who had 58 point the year before that, and 81 points 2 years prior
add on Lang who had 21 goals and 53 points the year before,
S Kost who had a 27 points in 52 games a rookie the year before
Latendresse who had 16 goals two years in a row before the start of the year.

Might not look it now, but on paper at the time, that was a good lineup

I still remeber THAT game vs the trashers when it all started to go downhill. Before it we had 60 points in 44 games.

Red pads, barberpole jerseys, 100th season that wasn't (according to some people), etc.
