He's not ready to perform at the NHL level.

There is no rush because it's very unlikely he cracks the opening night roster. The Oilers have his rights for a while, and MacT has been busy trying to build the actual NHL team.

He's just about guaranteed to go down to the OHL wheras the other guys who have been signed have a very good chance of playing. Lindholm would be an exception as he's likely going back to Sweden. Ristolainen while drafted after Nurse is more NHL ready and could play this year in the NHL or go to the AHL. Based on the other signings though Nurse will get $1,775,000/year whenever he signs.

0% chance he makes the team.

No reason to sign him to a contract right now.

I think they'll get it done soon. I was actually hoping that the Oilers would do things with Nurse similarly to what STL did with Pietrangelo. If he shows he's "remotely" good enough to play at the NHL level, keep him for the 9 games, then send him back. He gets a taste of the show and gets the understanding of what he needs to improve.

I highly doubt he gets 9 games. The Oilers will have piles of dmen in camp and you'd think Klefbom and Marincin (and Fedun) would get a look on the roster before Nurse. The 9 experienced guys they have signed right now take precedence and I think it would be near impossible for Nurse to rise up during this camp through that stack of competition.

Agreed. Trade him now while he has some value. Maybe Bo Horvat is available.

Why not just get him into a couple preseason games?

Even if he doens't play in the NHL this year I imagine he will still be signed shorty. It won't count until he plays any way. I am not sure what the hold up is, as I recal the oilers were one of the last teams to sign their first round picks the last three years. They seem to be a little slow at it for whatever reason. I think Yaks wasn't signed until august last year?

I bet that's what happens next year. This year is all OHL.

Rutherford actually said he'd be shocked if Lindholm wasn't with the team to start the season with the Canes. Although he did just injure his shoulder.

Eh, he doesn't exactly have to fight through a star studded prospect pool of defensemen. I could see him rising up if he plays well enough.

The fact that he's competing against one of the worst defensive prospect pools in the league works in his favor.

The last thing the Oilers should do is rush Nurse. The guy is RAW, and as a defenseman, he should be able hone his skills with his development years. It's the Oilers though, they may throw him to the wolves because they're bored.

He has said how important education is to him so I would wonder he, and possibly the oilers might keep an option like collage open.

Edit: After reading eligibility for the NCAA I don't think he would be able to go so I have no idea why they haven't

No, I don't think he'll play this year, but I still think it's a pretty good idea to get him signed now.

There's unlikely to be any serious negotiating to be done. Three D in the same region of the draft: Ristolainen (8 OV this year), Lindholm (6OV last year) and Rielly (5OV last year) all signed for the same contract - max rookie salary + max "A" bonuses and no "B" bonuses.

By signing him now you remove any re-entry worries. Not that you'd necessarily be particularly concerned about that, but that issue goes away once he's signed. Additionally, there is a marginal long term cap benefit to signing him now if he doesn't play in the NHL until either 14/15, or 15/16.

Signing Eberle a year early reduced his cap hit by $29k per season due to the way signing bonuses count against the cap. Looking at capgeek, the Oilers can drop Nurse's Caphit by $61.666k per season if they sign him now and he doesn't start until 2015.

Small beans but it is MacTavish's job to get every dollar he can out of the salary cap.

The fact he won't play next year is irrelevant, he should he signed within the next few weeks without a doubt.

There's like a 0.00000001% chance something bad could happen, but you get him signed now and eliminate that tiny risk all together.

I expect he will be signed in 2 weeks or less since it should he about a 5 minute negotiation. This is what you get, sign these papers, these are the bonuses, camp starts this date, enjoy the summer.

He's demanding $5.5M and a NMC. I think it's going to arbitration.

Yep, agreed. There's already a massive log-jam for young Dmen trying to crack the roster. I just can't see him cracking the line-up to play any regular season games unless he is absolutely lights out in training camp and pre-season games.

No rush to sign him at this point.
