More likely the demand for that kind of package would be in the Hall/Ebs/RNH/Yak range, not 2 prospect defensemen.

Jordan Leopold's extension with St. Louis is $4.5 million over 2 years ($2.25 AAV)

Solid deal for STL IMO.

Yeah MacT should buy his ass out.

I wouldn't mind bringing back Gilbert on a short 1-2 year deal. Would be decent as a stop gap and can we can give Justin Schultz bottom pairing minutes.

I understand people won't agree, but Gilbert > N.Schultz and I'd much rather have Gilbert.

Bring him back? Considering we "lost" the Schultz-Gilbert trade according to certain posters, it should be an easy decision to either claim him off waivers or re-sign him as a free agent.

Yeah I would claim him off waivers. His deal is only for this year so if he sucks then adios at the end of the year.

I would be fine with bringing back Gilbert. He isn't the solution to our D issues, but he's an upgrade on N Schultz and Potter

Our blue line doesn't need to be any softer than it already is.

I feel that if MacT strikes out on the trade front and only adds a couple small signings come UFA that this team will suck again next year and put a negative effect onto players like Hall and Eberle...

Schultz/Gilbert is a respectable 3rd pairing which we should be able to shelter if we can add a decent LHD to play with Petry.

@joemccool

I thought you could sign buyout guys right away, but I heard otherwise yesterday. Just looking for confirmation.

Pass on Gilbert

Soft defensemen that produces no offense, isn't good at making a break out pass, and is ineffective in the defensive zone.

The Oilers need players that can play NHL hockey, not ones that are playing their way out of the NHL.

I'd be attempting to trade Nick Schultz as fast as possible.

BLANK-Schultz (still need a guy here)
Smid-Petry
Belov-Gilbert
Potter/Klefbom

Looks nice.

EDIT: I keep forgetting about freaking Belov. We might need someone more defensive than Gilbert

Anyone else find it weird that theres next to no rumours on who the Oil are targeting in the UFA market? Can't wait until we do absolutely nothing and are the laughing stock of the league yet again. As for Gilbert I'd claim him, he'd look good on our second or 3rd pairing.

Depends what else is in the cards I wouldn't have a problem with gilbert in a lessor role. No he isn't the ideal candidate, but not getting the ideal candidate and then not get Gilbert is less than ideal.

Worse case scenario you waive him and send him to OKC.

Please no to Gilbert. Does not significantly improve the team so why bother?

In fairness to Ed Snider, if you squint really hard at the name Lecavalier, it sort of looks like Lidstrom.

So Potter/Belov for the bottom pairing then? That seems better to you?

Pretty sure you still have to wait until free agency begins - July 5.

Yep. I remember all the *****ing about how Gilbert was such a great NHL defenceman.

Where are those people now?

The club has cut ties with Fistric, Peckham, Tuebert and Plante. If they wanted some toughness on the blueline, they should have kept one or two of those guys in the fold.

Gilbert is an immediate upgrade on N. Schultz and Potter, and probably at least for this season, an upgrade on J. Schultz and Belov too. He had his best season the year he was traded, I'd hope he could come back and still be effective.

I want to mention that Tom Gilbert had pneumonia

"While neither used the sickness as an excuse, both players lost a lot of weight and Gilbert himself was actually hospitalized." - Russo

Could have been a big factor in his down year.
