Goaltender Rankings #1

Ranking the Top 20 Goalies in the NHL. Polls open for one day each, unless there is a clear run-away.

Also, let me know who should be added to the next poll.

1) ?

Rinne. Outplayed many goalies despite being heavily injured.

I'm more impressed watching Quick play than any other goalie in today's league

Easily Lundqvist.

Even those clammering Quick:
  • A 43 playoff game sample size of playoffs with a .935
  • A 286 season game sample with with a .915 save percentage
  • A cup & conne-smythe: which I believe is the most idiotic argument that exists, mainly due the tiny sample size, the team performance during that time, and the fact that its over one season. A losing with a losing record with a .935 save percentage
  • 1 Vezina Nominee
vs.
  • a 66 playoff game sample size with a .920 save percentage.
  • a 511 season game sample size with a .920 save percentage.
  • 5 vezina nominations, 1 Vezina, a Hart Trophy Nomination
  • a gold medal, when going against competition including Canada, Russia, the Czech Republic, and the U.S, which are easily superior to an NHL team. And going against Slovakia & Finland, which are easily NHL caliber.

    It's no contest.

Quick is great, but this is like comparing Tavares to Crosby.

and frankly, if you want to compare Quick accurately. Take goalie Stanley Cup runs and use that as a benchmark.
Fleury .933 sv%
Quick .946 sv%
Ward .920 sv%
Thomas .940 sv%
Osgood .930 sv%
Niemi .910 sv%
Giguere .922 sv%

Quick's is definitely impressive. It's the best playoff run, but his team's playoffs run is also one of the strongest in recent history.
All the other runs were less dominant and involved more losses by the team (some of the goalies didn't play every game).

It's a great run, but to combine that with a 902 save percentage and another run and anoint him the best goalie is flat out silly.

IMO he's tied for #2 with Rinne.

Did you really leave Lehtonen off your list who is at worst a top 5 goalie?

I voted Lundqvist

Lundqvist is on his own planet.

And it's been said, but seriously add Lehtonen.

The difference is the weight I put on it. His playoff performance is something to consider but it's not something you can base a premise on.
The gold medal is support. I would never say Lundqvist won a gold medal therefore he's the best.
Some ppl here have used 1.5 playoff performances as the core of their argument.

The core of my argument is simple performance. When you compare their stats and awards, it's like comparing an MBA to a BA.
