Ryan Sproul - OHL Defenseman of the Year

Absolutely deserved. His development has really accelerated over the past year. Over ripe jokes aside, how soon until we see him full-time with the Wings?

Depends on how long it takes him to grab hold of something.

Like Holland's neck.

His defensive side is likely to keep in the AHL for two years. This won't be an overripe case so much as he does really need to work on that part of his game. Really wish Blashill was playing him right now in Grand Rapids.

Keep in mind though if Babcock is around, Sproul is massive and can really skate, that might help since we all know Babcock is a size queen.

Honestly... that is pretty realistic projection.

13-14 in AHL
14-15 the same
15-16 gets some games
16-17 roster spot.

I'm excited about this kid but want to see how his D handles pro hockey.

I've been a big fan ever since he was drafted. It's been amazing to watch his development. If the Wings miss out on the playoffs - a real possibility at this point - I'd like to see guys like Sproul be given a shot. Yes, he needs to work on his defensive play. But the slow as molasses deferment pipeline hasn't worked so well for guys like Smith. Plus we need an elite offensive defensemen and Sproul is the only guy who fits the bill right now.

With this player, at this point in time, that is exactly what should happen. Sproul will likely need 2-3 years to round out his defensive play.

He put up similar numbers to Dougie Hamilton in terms of his production and clip he did it at. He was very deserving of this award.

Sproul = 1.32 point per
Hamilton = 1.28 point per

Obviously the difference comes in their own end, but just to give you a feel of just how impressive his offense was at that level. Better goal scoring clip as well.

I agree, I think next year he's going to have a down offensive year as he adjusts to having to play defence at pro speed. Right now I think I've read that his defence is just average for the OHL/CHL, maybe a year similar to Joe Morrow. Then in 14-15 he plays much better and we see his offense come more into play as he is used to the speed and will be able to better anticipate the plays. I'd also like to see him work at this using his monster frame to his advantage, either along the boards or by being more aggressive in front of the net. In 15-16 he'll be either the 1st, 2nd or 3rd call up for defence, it'll depend on who gets hurt and if Ouellet/Backman are in the NHL.

This is in my opinion and I think it's a best case scenario. I could see Sproul having a very rough first 2 years as his defence is very rough around the edges. The good thing is that he has all the tools to become either average or above average defensively while being above average or Elite offensively. At 6'4 he has the size and reach that will make effective at defending off the rush and he's also a great skater so if he can learn the defensive game he shouldn't get beaten very often.

It could be anywhere from 2.5-5 years before we see him on the Wings roster, it all depends on how he adjusts to the pro game and if he can learn to play adequately enough that his offensive ability outweighs his defensive gaffs.

Was going to guess Rielly will win. I think Mathieu Brisebois is most likely in the Q, maybe Gagne?

Kitchon did have a big offensive year though.

I should punch myself in the face. I think I saw 2 of the 3 Whalers home games vs. the Soo this season. I never knew to look for Sproul! Paterson of the Spirit I did watch for and Athanasiou for the Colts I did see as well. Very stupid of me.

I bet that's what you thought about Lashoff last year.
but really if he has a hot offensive start and an injurys hit he could get a call up

Imo there would have to be a lots of injuries.

Ouellet, Marchenko maybe Almqvit are ahead of him in the depth chart imo. Maybe Jensen if he comes.

That's on top of the 600 Dman we have on our roster.
