Tuomo Ruutu: Rutherford said the forward soon would undergo more hip surgery. Ruutu had surgery on one hip in December, with the understanding the second surgery on the other hip would come after the season.
"Our understanding is he will be 100 percent healthy for the start of training camp," Rutherford said. "He had the one hip operated on in December but they did not want to do both at the same time. Once Tuomo got back (in the lineup) it took him a few weeks to get going but now he's going. He's playing like Ruutu. He's a top six forward and really good player that we really missed."
Rutuu's Hips must really be made from glass. Was anyone else aware during his first surgery earlier this year that his other hip had to have surgery as well? News to me...

Sounds to me like it was a hip replacement - I don't know what else they can do one half of at one time, wait a couple months during which your patient will undergo severe wear and tear, and then come back and do the other. Of course not being a doctor I could be overlooking any number of things here.
Offseason priorities: Rutherford again said the Canes would restructure its defensive corps, saying, "Obviously we need to address the defense. We need to be a lot harder to play against. We made it too easy for opponents. We put some defensemen in roles this season and playing minutes they can't handle. We'll take a step back and see who fits and in what situations, then go from there. It will not be easy. We'll need to work hard and we'll need some luck, because finding the right guys and getting them is tough."
