GM Kevin Cheveldayoff end of season press conference

Just finished at the MTS Centre as Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff answered questions from the media today.

We've broken it down into 15 parts for ease of listening. Enjoy and comment.

1. Comparing season one to season two.
2. In hindsight was there a move in late March/early April he could have made to get his team in playoffs.
3. Will Claude Noel be back as head coach of the Jets.
4. With so many players contract status in the air, will team look a lot different next season:
5. With cap coming down, does he expect market to be exciting for the Jets.
6. Oilers MacT said there would be significant and meaningful change in Edmonton with 6-8 new players, is that the sort of image he has for this club:
7. Injury updates (Kane, Stuart, Enstrom, Slater).
8. Moving to the West, does he need to tweak his roster.
9. Play of Dustin Byfuglien.
10. Preparing to make a bigger splash this summer potentially:
11. What pieces does he need next year to be a better hockey club:
12. Follow-up to the above questions, asked for a specific.
13. Impatience from fan base, what can he say to that segment of the base.
14. Prospect talk (Scheifele/Trouba mentioned).
15. Play of Ondrej Pavelec.

Was Chevy really being honest when commenting on Pavs play or is he an inept GM?

My biggest gripe with Chevy is how damn bland he is. You can tell he was a player previously. I guess they all can't be Burke or Ray Shero when it comes to public discussion.

I doubt Burkie would jive with the market.

He wouldn't. I was referring to oratory abilities.

I don't know what he could honestly say... it should be hard to point fingers at other people when you yourself haven't really done much to contribute (yet I suppose).

Yes, I guess it's that either he's an inept GM or you're an inept talent evaluator. I'd suggest you compare resumes with him to get to the bottom of it, but I'm sure you're way ahead.

You can't argue that Pavelec hasn't matured since last year. Last year he had some glaring problems in his game and confidence. This year he improved on them, but he still has to work on inconsistency.

Chevy sounded pretty pissed about the inconsistency of the team as a whole, and it seemed like he hinted at some off season acquisitions. Should be an exciting off season.

I agree some people just love to complain............ I for one think Chevys doing a good job........ Sometimes the best move is the one that you dont do....or decline to do......That being said I would like to see him Hit a Homerun/grandslam this off season but would settle for 2 singles, a double and a walk....(baseball refrence about Chevys future performance)

Im just glad we dont have Uncle Fester as a Gm in Calgary........ or ...... the re- tread of Kevin Lowe and Mactavish in Edmonton .... living off their past Stanley Cup Glory years........and Vancouver GM Whining all the time..........

It could be worse

Our inept talent evaluator GM just had one of his draft picks named WHL player of the year.
What a clueless knob.

Chevy has been great so far, made good picks and stayed the course in trying to build a squad his way. And Noel has done a good job as well, he's got a lot out of this team which didn't have much depth or real elite talent!

Chevy seems to be doing well in the draft, but it is still far to early to tell. Lukas Sutter and the Pav extension are the only moves that stand out as sub par.

Way to early to evaluate Chevy IMO.

What separates a good GM from the rest is building a solid third and fourth line. Last seasons re-signing of Wellwood was the only let down for me.

I don't expect any big trades or signings. We don't have an abundance of assets and we're not considered close to being a contender.

Look forward to draft day.

I disagree with you here. It seems to me it is the perfect time to now start building this team into a powerful contender. We have a handful of players in there prime. A core group of young players that are ready to shine (kane, bogo , schief, trouba). I don't see why you wouldn't want to wait on adding to this lineup.

BS, Chevy himself has mentioned that the picks made at the 2011 NHL entry draft were those by the retained former Thrashers scouting staff.

Which he had the final say in. He trusted their notes and judgements enough to go with it, but Scheifele is every bit a TNSE pick. What's to say Lowry isn't one?

When you have last say you either get the credit or the blame, you can't pick and choose.

And when did Chevy pick and choose?

I want Scheifelle to succeed, I really do. Hell I drove to Barrie on my vacation to take my cousins to see him and the Colts play. But let's not put lipstick on a pig; Dougie Hamilton was on the board and we reached for this kid who has yet to do anything in the NHL unlike people taken after him. It was a reach and until Mark justifies the pick (unfairly I would agree as it's pressure on him thats not necessary) this pick is a mistake in my eyes alongside Pavelec.

Surely you also meant to include the Jokinen signing too?

I believe the Scheiffle pick was wrong...but I'll blame that on the ineptness of the Thrashers' scouting staff

I've always been under the pressure that mark was Kevin's pick; that Duckie convinced him mark was a gem

From what I recall it was Chevy crediting the scouts. He mentioned Hawerchuk's enthusiasm for the kid I thought more because Ducky was a name here and not because he valued his opinion over everyone else.

I don't think you can hold it against Chevy for how Jokinen played out - he was our best option last year, and we got him. Coming off a good year in Calgary, no one could have predicted that he would play as terribly as he did. It's just unfortunate for us that he has another year here if he can't pick it up next season. Everyone was fairly happy with the signing when it first happened, though.
