Flyers to Offer-Sheet Alex Pietrangelo?

per Tim Panaccio

Dont be surprised if Flyers try an RFA offer sheet to StL' Pietrangelo this summer. After last summer, they MUST fix the defense

Could be a chance for the Flyers to attempt the often-discussed-on-blogs/message boards technique of 'sign one guy to an offer sheet, wait for the team to match, then offer sheet their other player' as the Flyers could offer-sheet Pietrangelo, wait for the Blues to match, then offer-sheet Shattenkirk. I doubt the Blues wouldn't match both, but would they want to go into next season with 3 defenemen making more than $6 million?!

Doug Armstrong and Tom Stillman have both repeatedly said they aren't concerned over getting Shattenkirk and Pietrangelo signed. Armstrong has also said acquiring Bouwmeester doesn't change anything.

If there's actual issues, at the most, a forward gets moved before one of those two D.

Also, the last time the Blues got offer sheeted they retaliated with one of their own.

I've literally never been less worried about anything in my entire life.

...and I was so hoping that this wouldn't make it onto the main boards...

1. St. Louis will get him signed.
2. If they don't, the Flyers will hardly be the only team to submit an offer sheet.
3. Even if teams submit offersheets, there's not reason to believe that they will be successful unless the Blues low-ball Pietrangelo.
4. The Blues have no reason to low-ball Pietrangelo.

Sometimes you're reading and it's like, 'Oh my God, who is this lunatic?' What are they writing about. It was nothing close to the truth or close to related to hockey.

Panaccio probably didnt even know who Alex Pietrangelo was two days ago. This is the same guy who suggested the Flyers should trade their first for the super star defenseman Ryan Whitney.

The Flyers will certainly look at the Blues dmen...but I wouldn't take this tweet seriously.

I assume your saying McDavid will be the best player in the draft the way many assume. If thats the case, have the Flyers ever had the first overall pick? To build on that, if the Flyers got either Pietrangelo or Shatty, what are the chances that they have the first overall in 2015? Yeah, not very good.

it will be a lot more difficult to make it work now with the term restrictions.

phi will have as much trouble budgeting 8+ for a player as stl.

where as last season it was a 7.X cap hit vs 13M/Y pay. can't really work that way anymore.

Id rather draft a forward at 11th then try to trade coots and whatever else for Shattenkirk.

Yeah the Flyers really don't have the salary cap space to make a meaningful offer. Unless they can find a buyer for Briere's 6.5 mil contract and convince him to accept the trade AND amnesty Bryz AND somehow convince Giroux and his agent to "wink wink, nudge, nudge" accept a deal with a smallish cap hit come contract talk time AND probably dump Meszaros' and his porcelain butt on some poor unsuspecting team AND hope St. Louis is foolish enough to let him go.

So yeah all those things will probably happen. Easy as pie.

Oh it was Panaccio. Yeah he's not a reliable source. For anything. Hockey rumors, cake recipes, directions to the airport, etc. There isn't enough grains of salt in the world capable of making his rumors worthwhile.

Holmgren is only gonna be a **** for so long before everybody decides to toss offer sheets at his players.

that wouldn't shock me, but I think that the blues will lock him up long term.

We have plenty of cap space dont worry. This wont happen though, Shattenkirk is more realistic.

Offer sheeting players on one of the richest teams in the league won't accomplish anything. Especially with the contract limits of the new CBA. Ridiculous offer sheets like the one Weber signed last year aren't possible anymore.

Actually no. Not ever. See one Patrick Kane for a "hilarious" example of this.

Being rich means jack crap if you don't have cap space.

Someone will offer sheet him as well as a few other STL players....thus seriously handcuffing ST Louis.

Philadlephi likely isnt alone in teams kicking the tires on this idea.
