FLA 1st Trade down.

Would Florida, if they win the lottery, be open to trade down to the #3 slot?

What would they want in return?

If they win the lottery they're more likely to trade down to #2 with Colorado.

If they want Mackinnon anyway they might as well get some assets from moving down since the Avs would take Jones.

Can I ask why think they'd be interested in potentially trading down?

I know they have Gudbranson, Kulikov, etc among others. Do they require a winger (likely Drouin) if they trade down?

It makes sense, but I doubt they would get much. Just the willingness alone shows the Avs that they would sooner pass on Jones and take Nate. They'd get more from a team wanting to get Jones from around the 4th/5th spot or lower.

In 2002, the Panthers wanted Bouwmeester, but didn't want to draft him 1st overall. I believe the concern was money. So they traded down with Columbus (who wanted Nash). They traded something minor to Atlanta to ensure that they wouldn't draft Jay, though everyone knew that they were taking Lehtonen.

In 2003, they traded down with Pittsburgh because Pittsburgh wanted Fleury. Florida had no interest in Fluery (they had Luongo) and IIRC saw no difference between Staal and Horton (hindsight LOL). So they got something for trading down:

Panthers trade 1st overall and 73rd overall (a 3rd rounder) for the 3rd overall, a 2nd rounder and Mikkael Samuelsson, who at that time had a career high of 22 points in 58 games with the Pens.

On topic, the Panthers will trade down if:

--They don't want Jones, and
--They see no difference between MacKinnon or Drouin.

In which case, they will want to get something for their pick.

Though in all honesty, that was the old, inept, poorly run Panthers. I would think that Tallon et al. will want to drive up buzz about having the first overall selection.

If they decide to trade it, it wont cost much for the 2nd/3rd picking teams. Similar to the 03 situation.

Now, if the #4 or #5 teams want the pick, its would probably take a fairly significant asset for them to drop that far.

Because an awesome defense won't help if the team struggles to score in every game, which has been a problem ever since Bure left.

Huberdeau would probably have around 15-20 pts more if he had someone playing with him that could finish those passes he makes. MacKinnon is more needed than Jones, simple as that.

You're seriously comparing Dale Tallon to the front office that ran the Panthers in 2003?

Yeah, good luck trying to get that pick for "not much". Ain't gonna happen with DT.

Something similar was done in Vancouver when they drafted the Sedins. They gave Atlanta something small with the assurances they would take Stefan.

IMO Florida drafts one of the forwards. If they win the lotery they will look at what is offered and where they would trade down to.

They aren't trading down......

Florida - Jones
Colorado - Drouin
Tampa - Mackinnon
Carolina - Barkov
Edmonton - ........

Actually come to think of it......

Edmonton trades Gagner and their first for #1 overall and selects Jones

Yeah I was thinking that too. I just hope Sherman is smart enough to see that because the difference in the top 3 isn't enough to give up anything significant.
Especially when Florida might be bluffing.

Lol yeah I don't think so. If Florida trades down it will only be with Colorado IMO. Otherwise no.

They arent going with Jones at #1. They need help up front, and they need a legit top line center. MacKinnon and Huberdeau will be the best tandem the Panthers have had since Bure, and whoever.

This is exactly what I think will happen, if we get the 1st overall.

We NEED MacKinnon, and Avs want Jones. Perfect match for a trade.

Drouin seems very similar to Huberdeau IMO.

And Florida has so much quantity in the prospect-pool, and got pretty good quality. We don't need more assets, we need a quality one. And MacKinnon is that piece to the puzzle.

It doesn't matter. No team in the Top 3 will give up a significant piece to move up 1 or 2 spots when Mackinnon or Drouin is available.

If FLA moves the pick, it will be something like 1st for 2nd + 62nd.

If Florida wants more, then they get nothing and draft 1st.

I would take that deal personally cause the Panthers lack a 3rd round pick this yr. I just dont think ANYONE knows what Tallon & Santos are planning to do if they end up with the #1 overall pick so that makes it difficult.

Yea exactly.

The Panthers will only even consider moving there pick if they decide they want a forward rather then a Dman. If they decide this, then Colorado would obviously want Jones. So by trading with the Avs it ensure both teams get the guy they want.

Avs would only have to give up something relatively small to make the deal. Such as the 3rd rounder.

But again, it all comes down to whether or not Florida has any interest in Jones.

What would it take for Tampa to jump up from #3? Considering the Avs center depth, they may very well take Drouin at 2 if Jones goes 1, which still leaves Mac at 3.

I wouldn't be quick to assume the Avs take Drouin. The ROR situation isn't fully solved yet (might still get traded at next year's deadline) and Stastny is a UFA after next season. MacKinnon would have a center spot if either situation is dealt with.

I obviously don't know this for certain. But I highly doubt the Avs would take Drouin at #2.

Mackinnon is exactly the type of player the Avs like, and he could play wing for us next year.

Plus, with the whole ROR situation still not resolved and Stastny potentially being traded or leaving after next season, we could certainly use another Winger/Center like Mackinnon.
