This. Picking up Lackey's option is a no-brainer, because he'll be cheap, and someone will give up something to get him.

With Carl Crawford leaving the Dodgers game hurt tonight thought I'd look at the Dodger threesome.

Crawford and Gonzalez are having great years. Both with an OPS+ greater than their career average. (Gonzalez at 146, career 137. Crawford 126, career 106)

Josh Beckett? Not so much. An ERA+ of 71.

Combined salaries for the three? 400 billion million dollars.

Beckett said he might retire today. He has been feeling numbness in his pitching arm for 5 weeks now.

Napoli has been much better than I expected at first but for some reason he struggles with any throw that bounces to him no matter how routine it looks

Sox up 3-0 in 6th with rain delay

Well if the rain does not let up, the Sox will have a win in Yankee Stadium and take 2 of 3. Buchholtz can be 8-0 if this holds up.

WOW delay an 8pm startb45 min with no rain now in 6th and game delayed.

They could have had a normal 7pm with no stupid delay and rain in the 8th or 9th or never.

Even 6 inning wins are sweet against the Yankees.

the angels have to win tonight or they get swept by the astros. they turn to joe blanton to prevent it so that should be fun.

pirates/braves is probably the game of the night. burnett/medlen only have 4 wins combined(!) but burnett has pitched well this year and actually leads the national league in k/9.

dbags/cards will probably be a good one too.

The Pirates pitching staff as a whole doesn't get enough credit. They kept their team in it for awhile last year when they had zero offense, and now they are doing the same with a slightly better offense (hello agent Starling)

Really strong bullpen. That Melancon kid seems pretty good...

JK, he would still definitely blow here. Still leaves that fastball up from time to time.

Jason Grilli has been great so far. People can rag on the lack of pressure, but no one is even nicking him right now. Joel Hanrawho?

if i'm a pirates fan, i just worry about what happens in august. the last two years going into august:

2011: 54-52, struggled a bit but still went .500 in july. proceed to go 18-38 in august/september.

2012: 60-44, had a great july (17-9!). went 20-39 down the stretch.

it's one of those things where you want to see them succeed. i'd love to see mccutchen in the postseason. but i'll believe it when i see it.

Pitts is gonna be playoff-bound very soon. Don't know whether they'll get there this year, but with hot specs like Cole, Taillon, Hanson and Polanco, it's only a matter of time. The NL central isn't the exact definition of a juggernaut

@topic: I am actually surprised of how well we are doing. All that without Adrian, CC and Beckett. We were exepcted to finish last. But to be fair, I haven't picked them much higher than last place. They basically switched roles with the Jays.
Buchholz is going off, 8-0 with an ERa around 1.5-1.6 is darn impressive. Imagine what we could get for him at the deadline if we decided to trade him and stockpile even more prospects. He's cheap for todays standards, under control long-term and pitching like a true ace.
They are not doing that while being in 1st place and in contention, but we could easily get 3 top 100 specs.

maybe those stolen bases might have had something to do with it.

He finally shows some edge and toughness in a game and he's out for a week. The kid is a puss and can't go soon enough.

Yeah but if Bradlee is not ready you need him. Johnny Gomes hitting .178 does not cut it. He is not even a good pinch hitter with those stats.

I think Middlebrooks may need time at Pawtucket if he can't hit better than .200

Iglesias is hitting well above that and hot and a good sub for now until Middlebrooks works out his hitting woea.

I can't imagine anyone offering big money to Ells with his injury problems and unproven track record for consistency.

Too bad Ells just cannot stay healthy to save his life. I wouldn't go as far as saying that I am happy when he's gone, I have always liked him, but it's pretty obvious that he's gone after the season. JBJ is his successor...

I am glad we got so much depth at multiple positions. Iglesias/Ciriaco at the left side of the Infield. Webster, Morales and even Aceves. JBJ in the outfield. Lavarnway behind the dish.

Um, Ciriaco is about 5 days from being DFA'd (when Middlebrooks is off the DL) and with cause too so I'd hold off on referring to him as depth.

I think "bruinswincup" is probably Dr. Thomas Gill.

I like that element of speed which the Sox have historically lacked. Look what that stolen base did to help the Sox win a world series when they came back against the Yanks.

Having that aspect can help you create runs or offense when the bats are struggling.

For some reason, other teams steal the Sox blind and the pitchers don't keep the runners honest enough to limit the bases stolen. Course, Salty is not the best defensive catcher either and some even question the ways he handles pitchers or call a game.
