I doubt Carolina takes Nikki.

They will take Monahan or Barkov if available. They like big centres who are Canadian.

If the Flames somehow get Barkov at 6, i will poop.

I know, but Barkov is a cant-miss prospect which is why i think Carolina would take him. I just dont see them taking a big Russian winger.

they are set on centers while they need depth on wing or even defenseman

They are not set on centers, if they had another top line centre they could move Staal to wing. They either take one of Monahan/Barkov/Lindholm or go off the board and grab Nurse.

Even if the Canes were set on centre, which they're not, it doesn't make sense to take a lesser player because it fills a current need. They'll take the player they feel is the BPA, as should every team.

My guess is they take Lindholm leaving the Flames to choose between Monahan and Nichushkin. And based on Nichuskin's recent comments on wanting to stay in Russia for a few more years, I highly doubt the Flames will take him. So it's basically down to Monahan unless the Weisbrod and co. decide to go off board again.

This will be a big generalization, but prospects drafted as centermen rarely stay as centremen, so the Canes will take a centremen with the expectation that hell become a winger anyways

Thanks for the link; it actually sounded like a fairly honest interview, overall. Obviously Button isn't going to fully crap all over a new draftee, but I don't think he was really sugarcoating to a great extent, either. Good to know that Djanko Unchained is progressing as they'd expected.

I think he has said he wants to go back to Sweden for one more year.

I also think he will play 1 more year with Brynas. I forget where I heard it, but someone mentioned he had a 2year commitment with them.

If we select him with our 6th overall I would want him to play one more year in Brynas for his development. Is he WJ U20 eligible?

Yup. He doesn't turn 20 until late 2014.

He's got a very good defensive game that should translate well to the NHL, and has the ability to stick around as the 3/4th centre, if he wants - there's an unsubstantiated rumour that he wants to return to Sweden next season.

It's not unsubstantiated, he stated it himself.

"As it seems now." I wonder if that would change if Feaster told him that he thought Elias was ready now. All hypothetical, of course. It's anything but a flat refusal to come over next year.

Probably would, but I think playing top-line minutes / 1st PP with Brynas would be better for his development than 3rd line minutes / 2nd PP with the Flames.

Does anyone know why everyone seems so certain that Carolina won't take Lindholm? He's higher ranked on most lists, yet just about every mock has Carolina passing on him.

It might have to do with the general assumption by many Rutherford/'Canes brass are satisfied enough with their skill up front/forward depth right now that they'll pass in favor of taking a D-man with that 1st. Many mocks I've seen have Carolina nabbing Nurse or Ristolainen.

Most Carolina fans don't believe they'll take him.
Draft tendency says they would take a Canadian 2 way centre over him (Monahan)
Team need for a big winger Nichushkin (also considered BPA) would make sense
and pre-draft lottery there was talk they wanted a big name D man like Nurse

there's still a solid chance they would take him but lots of reasons to think they have someone else higher on their list

Draft history shows that the Hurricanes shy away from European/Russian players in the first round. It also shows that they aren't real keen on taking a defenseman in the first round (aside from Murphy).
