1957-58 NHL Players and Owners Meeting

Brief Montreal Gazette article about the NHL players and owners meeting:

Anti-trust lawsuit withdrawn. Interesting glimpse at salaries and working conditions.

Were the lawyers completely out of the picture for this? It looks like the players received very little in exchange for dropping the association and anti-trust suit

Cost of Litigation

Cost of litigation balanced against the fact that Major League Baseball was anti-trust exempt. NHL players could not afford to lose. The resulting tie with small gains set a foundation.

Also in the early fifties the Federal Government in the USA had taken on the International Boxing Club - James Norris and Arther Wirtz about the control of boxing championship fights in the USA:

Yet when all was said and done little changed. 1958 Montreal got the Archie Moore / Yvon Durelle fight. Little else.

Time was not right to take things further.

A lawyer by the name of Milton Mound was in the picture on the players side, however, the owners & Campbell pretty much dispatched his efforts as witness this hilarious albeit dramatised exchange from the script of the 1995 movie Net Worth, which was of course based on the book of the same name. The setting was I believe in a pre-trial hearing room;

Ted Lindsay;
What By-Laws? I've been in the league 12yrs and Ive never heard of no "By-Laws"?...

Conn Smythe;
(brandishing a book) There right here.

Milton Mound; May I see them please?

Conn Smythe;
There confidential.

Milton Mound;
How can By-Laws be "confidential"?

Conn Smythe; Only the Governors are privy to them. Says so right here in the By-Laws.

Milton Mound; Well you show me where it says that....

Conn Smythe; Your prohibited from seeing the By-Laws. Says so in the By-Laws.

Sounds like an exchange at the Monty Python argument clinic.

... Pretty much. Lindsay & Doug Harvey of Montreal were the two main proponents in forming the Association. The tactics the NHL employed in busting it up, from Smythe to Adams in Detroit & elsewhere your text book mid-20th-Century-Bully-Boy nonsense. The league still practices such, theyve just gotten a lot more sophisticated as to how they go about it. Last fall when the BOG's negotiating committee pursuant to the CBA telling the players a deal could get done provided Don Fehr wasnt in the room, the take-down of Goodenow some 7-8yrs earlier, subversion of Eagleson & so on & so forth. And of course we all know how the NHL kept their word from 57 in promising to match the players contributions to the Pension, taking payment "holidays", just on & on & on.... Trying to get real hard data, facts & information out of them akin to trying to find out what really happened at Roswell in 1947, or being in 1957 Soviet Russia and asking for information about Hungary or Elvis Presley. Sorry, no idea what your talking about, I.D. please. Is this your current address? Will you be there tomorrow at 5AM?
