Niklas Backstrom has agreed to a three-year deal. I don't have an exact cap hit yet, but it's less than $4 million annually.

Agreed, but not a lot of options. Better to have Backs for three years than give up too much for a similar goalie via trade.

Undoubtedly, but if he gets injured then we have the over 35 multi year deal stuck to the cap.

I'm fine with this. Let's Kuemper or Gustafsson be the backup and maybe platoon with Backs next year and then start the third year.

Would you rather have 3 years of Backstrom at $3.5m per or 5+ years of Mike Smith at $5m+ per? Not a lot of options.

If it's over 3 mil this is awful that term is gross, at least we should have another compliance buyout next year

I just hope Kuemper is ready and takes the reigns by year two.

im okay with 3 years, but the money is probably gonna be something ridiculous like 4 to 4.5/year

either way we have 2 cheap young goalies, as they mature we can switch Backs to a backup role

I'm ok with this if it's a decent cap hit.

I would've given him 2 years, but keeping him was the best choice we had to take care of the goaltending (for the time being) without giving up any assets. What are the chances we could still get Cullen signed with the cap space we have left or is he as good as gone?

Great news.

I'd be fine with something between 3-3.5 per year.

I'll bet he comes back cheap, but Clutterbuck will be gone.

What do we think the cap will increase to next year? I don't think this contract is going to ultimately affect the direction of this team...old in age but he had a late start to the NHL...

Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

One year too long, but not many decent options that would have come cheap. Look at what he would have gotten on the market. Look at what other goalies were out there for cheap. Backs isn't always reliable, but not much else out there any better.

I bet the cap hit is around 4 per year. Backstrom had Fletch bent over, because of Fletch's poor planning. Hopefully he took a bit of a discount considering he probably wants to win in his last contract but I still don't see him taking a a huge paycut.

Like it or not, he took a discount. And that doesn't happen often when it comes to this team.

Although I like that Fletcher's "look at every goalie" bluff paid off with Backstrom signing for a lot less as an UFA, I don't like 3 years at 35+.

Still, it helps settle the goalie question for next year. Minnesota needed to do that more than anything. The team can now focus on defensive depth, re-signing Pominville to an extension and what to do with the young forwards.

Cullen isn't in PMB territory yet. He can get signed and not be replaced depending on if he wants to come back for the right price. Not sure if the Wild are in that position yet but Fletcher has been successful so far this summer in getting good money deals with the team's potential free agents.
