Aug. 6: Chris Mason signs with Bisons' Foe

Goaltender Chris Mason, from the 2011-12 Winnipeg Jets, has signed with Ritten Sport. The Bisons and Ritten will play one another if they win the semi-finals of the tournament in Collalbo, Italy on August 31st. Ritten is quite excited about the signing, especially since Mason once played for Canada in the worlds. Mason played for Nashville in the NHL last season.

Aug. 8: News from points west ...

Still nothing new from the Herd. But, there have been some announcements from the western wing of the CW.

The Evil Monkeys will once again face the Edmontown Greasers (rookie squad). It is good to see them bring back this fixture. I would like to see the Bisons face the Jets' rookies.
Quote:
The history of the Golden Bears vs. the Edmonton Oilers’ rookies game goes back to 1988, and was a yearly tradition for over 20 years. The teams last met in 2009 when the Bears skated to a 4-3 victory, which bumped their record against the Oilers’ rookies to 12-10.

The Extinct Ones became the latest team to post their exhibition games on their schedule page. Here's the sked:

Sept. 6 Calgary v Alberta (at Banff)
Sept. 7 Alberta v Calgary (at Banff)
Sept. 13 Calgary v Manitoba (at Regina)
Sept. 14 Saskatchewan v Calgary (at Regina)
Sept. 15 Calgary v Lethbridge (at Regina)
Sept. 19 Mount Royal at Calgary
Sept. 21 Saskatchewan v Calgary (at Edmonton)
Sept. 27 Alberta at Calgary
Sept. 28 Calgary v Alberta (at St. Albert)

The Tweety-Birds announced another recruit, Anthony Bardaro. He had 25 goals for the Prince Albert Raiders last year.

Looks like a regular season schedule - I guess they want to start the season early. They play UA four times plus the 4 more games in the regular season for 8. Either they better get use to losing or find a chink in the amour.

The other odd thing about the Bedrock schedule is that they play only 1 away game and 2 home games. The other 6 are at neutral sites.

Also, no games outside the CW. They usually play NCAA and ACAC teams as well.

Aug. 11: Ritten's Manitoba Contingent Grows

Former Manitoba Moose defenceman Travis Ramsey has now been signed by Ritten Sport. The past two seasons the Jets signed him to play for the St. John's Ice Caps. Although his point totals are low, he was a +4 on a minus team last year.

Aug. 12: Battle of Bedrock Announced

There will be one more NHL-CIS match-up this pre-season. In the Town of Bedrock the Phlegms will do battle with the Dinos. These teams also faced each other in 2011. So on September 9 it will be Phlegms @ U of C and on September 10 it will be Greasers @ U of A. Now it is time for the Jets to face the Bisons.

BTW, these two games have been added to the CW composite schedule, but no other exhibition games have been.

Aug. 15: Bisons to face Klostersee

On a day when the CW webmaster went nuts, one more Bison opponent on the European vacation has been disclosed. The Bisons will face EHC Klostersee on August 29th. They are in the Oberliga, the 3rd tier of German hockey. The Bisons' other German opponents (now and in 2011) have come from the DEL2 (the 2nd tier of German hockey).

The schedule also has the Bisons opening their tour on August 26th instead of 27th (as per the Rosenheim site and pretty much every European link). We'll see if this is corrected.

In other notes, the CW composite says the Bisons will face UND at Fargo. Not sure why that would be. Three games in three days, and they would have to spend a couple more hours on the highway. Are they hoping that Fargo fans will confuse them for a new NDSU Bison team?

There are a pile of other new games added, none of which have shown up on team sites as yet. Lethbridge, Saskatchewan, and Mount Royal have diddly squat on the pre-season.

Aug. 17: Bison Euro-foes Have Started Playing

The teams the Bisons are facing (or may be facing in the tournament) during their European tour have started playing and have made more signings.

The schedule links for most teams still do not have exhibition games posted yet. But two opponents have a list from the Sportforen.de message board, which seems to have it all for German teams.

Links:
:. [Sportforen]

Starbulls Rosenheim 3
EC Villacher SV 4

(in shoot-out)

When the Starbulls face the Bisons, it will be their 4th game of the season. Villacher is a good team from the EBEL, Austria's top league with a few teams from other countries. Their remaining games are:

Aug 18 v Villacher SV (A)
Aug 23 v HC Bozen/Bolzano (H)
Aug 27 v Manitoba Bisons (H)
Aug 30 v Sterzing Broncos (H)
Sept 01 v Sterzing Broncos (A)
Sept 06 v HC Pustertal (A)
Sept 08 v HC Pustertal (H)

Bozen/Bolzano is an Italian side that has moved to the EBEL effective this year. Sterzing and Pusteral are in the Italian Elite A.

Fischtown Pinguins 6
Hannover Scorpions 1

The Scorpions are in the Oberliga, which is the 3rd tier of German hockey. Their game with the Bisons will be their 4th as well. Here is the schedule:

Aug 23 v Esbjerg Elite Ishockey (A)
Aug 25 v Hannover Scorpions (A)
Aug 31 v Manitoba Bisons (tournament in Ritten)
Sept 1 3rd place match or final v HC Neumarkt/Egna or Ritten/Renon
Sept 6 v Odense Bulldogs (SWB-Cup in Bremerhaven)
Sept 7 3rd place match or final in Bremerhaven

Esbjergand Odense are Danish teams.

While Ritten/Renon Sport has yet to announce a full schedule and has yet to play a game, they have announced yet another big signing. Eric Johansson, born in Edmonton but with dual Swedish citizenship, has signed. He is a vet, having played in the AHL for 3 seasons ended in 2005. Since then he has played mostly in Sweden. Ritten seems determined to boost themselves to a higher level.

The Neumarkt/Egna Wild Geese do not have the splashy announcements of the other Bison opponents. But there was a story about them signing a young Slovak, Matej Direr, who just been out of junior for a year.

Aug. 18: Conference Recruiting News

The only CW team to have a new official announcement about recruits is the University of British California. They have announced that goaltender Jordan White is not coming back but the replacement is former Regina Pat Matt Hewitt. White was doing very well in his 3rd and 4th years at UBC after being kind of mediocre in years 1 and 2. I am sure that they would rather have him back for a 5th year. Still, UBC needs a steady flow of WHL recruits into their program if they want to sit with the cool kids instead of being perpetually seated at the little school table.

Links:
:. [UBC Story]
:. [Hewitt at Elite Prospects]

The Evil Monkeys have made their 2nd annual announcement that open tryouts will be held. They have stated that prospective players must have played "Midget AAA or higher".

Links:
:. [U of A Story]

There were a few transactions affecting CW teams listed at Elite Prospects, none of which were accompanied by team announcements. Could be that since these guys are not from the WHL they are just getting tryouts.

Nevertheless, here's the list:

Miguel Pereira - Listed as going from Grenoble to Regina, although he played for the Weyburn Red Wings last year. Looks like he changed his mind. Why would he want to leave Grenoble for Regina?

Derek Huisman - He is a forward from the Merritt Centennials of the BCHL now headed to the New Kittens on the Block. He has been about a point per game Junior A player the last two years.

Myles Hovdebo - He is a goaltender listed as having transferred from Selkirk College (BCIHL) to the Bedrock Dinos. Selkirk also lost one other goaltender, but have recruited three new ones as well. He is not listed as having ever actually played at Selkirk. He spent the last 3 years with the Laronge Icewolves. Although Dustin Butler is gone, the Dinos still have Jacob DeSerres (arguably their #1 by the end of the year) and Kris Lazaruk (who never played last year) eligible to return.

Aug. 19: Italian News, Rosenheim Loses

Starbulls Rosenheim 1
EC Villacher SV 3

The Starbulls lost the rematch to their Austrian foes. The shots on goal are not shown in the summary and it is hard to glean from a translated story just what the game was like. Shawn Weller had an assist.

Rosenheim will now play HC Bozen/Bolzano Foxes (Italian team new to the EBEL) on Friday before facing the Bisons on August 27th.

Links:
:. [Game Story at Rosenheim24.de] :. [Translated]
:. [Summary] :. [Translated]

I have also pieced together the changes in Italian hockey. I have linked stories from the meetings they held. Their top league is to now be called Elite.A and there is no automatic promotion/relegation system. Teams can move up if they meet arena, sponsorship, and other criteria. Most of the 2nd tier teams are either moving to the INL (such as Neumarkt/Egna) or otherwise restructuring. One (Sterzing/Vipetano) is moving back to Elite.A. Last season (as "Serie A") they had 10 teams. HC Bozen/Bolzano Foxes have moved to the Austrian EBEL. HC Alleghe Civette lost sponsorship and are moving down a league. I have no idea what has happened to Aquile Friuli Venezia Giulia. So, 10 - 3 = 7. Then you add Sterzing/Vipetano and they are back to 8. One team they thought they may lose to the KHL is Hockey Milano Rossoblu. Although they are not listed at Eurohockey.com, their own website claims they are set for the Elite.A this year. The other five returnees are Asiago Hockey, HC Valpellice, Sportivi Ghiaccio Cortina, SHC Fassa, and HC Val Pusteria/Pustertal.

Could the KHL succeed in "non-traditional" hockey markets like Milan? Well, the NHL has tried Phoenix, Atlanta, etc. so what the heck! BTW, Andrew Raycroft and Angelo Esposito play for Milan.

Ritten/Renon Sport have released a full roster page, and an interview with Chris Mason. Sounds like he and his wife wanted to spend some time in Italy before he retires. He had previously played in Norway.

Bison Training Camp Update

I stopped by Max Bell arena last night to check out the 2013-14 edition of the Bisons. I liked what I saw.

Ian DuVal was flying and looked great on a line with Aaron Lewadniuk and Taylor Dickin (they are all very fast, very smart and very skilled). Could be a very potent line.

New recruit Jordan DePape looked good, quick and with good hands.

The scary line of Paul Ciarelli, Dylan Kelly and Jesse Paradis was back together and looked big and strong. i would not want to be an opposing defenceman when they are on the ice.

the Bisons' defence will be their strength. some real good players. Dane Crowley is back as is Jeremy Schappert. Travis Bobbee looks smooth as silk and Darren Bestland brings something very special to this team. the next group are also very good - this defence is deep. Lee Christensen looks great, Brock Sutherland looks real good too. Recruit Luke Paulsen has real potential and there is a new guy back there - very smooth, looks like a pro. not sure who he is.

anyway i am looking forward to another very strong performance by the Bisons this year especially with the benefit of a European tour to start things off.

Aug. 23: News and Scores

The Bisons' site has uploaded a story on the tour. It confirms the information previously posted in this thread and has a quote from the coach. The site does not yet have a training camp roster, but camp has started.

Links:
:. [U of M Story]

Starbulls Rosenheim 2
HC Bozen/Bolzano Foxes 1

Tyler McNeely scored both goals for Rosenheim and Shawn Weller had two assists. So their imports are clearly the players to watch. The Bisons will likely counter with a choice defence combo when the two sides clash on Tuesday. Rosenheim is now 1-1-1 in pre-season, and the Bisons are their next opponent. The Foxes are an Italian team in the debut season in the Austria-based EBEL.

Fischtown Pinguins 1
Esbjerg Elite Ishockey 0

(in shoot-out)

The Bisons could be facing a solid D next Friday when they face the Waddling Ones. Esbjerg (a Danish team) must have a strong goaltender. I like how some translations come out:
Quote:
Although the Seestädter were able to record 19/6 Shots on goal in their favor, it simply was not possible to accommodate the black hard rubber disc in the case of Ervin Mustukovs well defended. After Sergei Stas and Tyler Ellington after a personal dispute in the 27th Minutes were sent out to the showers, the hosts came into the game a little better, but now Brett Jaeger could also provide proof of his class. Nachem until the second half has the game became increasingly incoherent, penguin coach Mike Stewart was happy to re-instructed to send his men on the ice again in the last scene of the game.
So, there you go! The Pingies will face the Hanover Scorpions on Sunday before facing the Bisons next Saturday.

Elite Prospects has a CIS recruit page which, while not complete, is worth a periodic check-in. The H0rny Ones have landed goaltender Alex Sirard from Selkirk College of the BCIHL. Their source was the player's Twitter! And Lakehead picked up goaltender Justin McDonald from the OCN Blizzard.

Aug. 25: Scores and an Arena Breakdown

My son was anxious to give his brand new hockey equipment a trial run and we found out about public ice being available at the Max Bell. Only problem is that high temperatures and humidity forced closure for the afternoon. Ironic, considering what happened to EHC Klostersee ...

EHC Klostersee's home arena in Grafing has sprung a leak from a valve in the ice machine, putting the facility out of commission for about a week. So the Bison game on Thursday is shifting to another venue. The options are Bad Tolz and Erding. All of these places are east of Munich and west of Rosenheim. This is their pre-disaster pre-season schedule:

Aug. 29 in Grafing v Manitoba Bisons
Sept. 1 at EC Peiting
Sept. 6 at TEV Miesbach
Sept. 8 in Grafing v EC Peiting
Sept. 13 in Grafing v Erding Gladiators
Sept. 15 in Grafing v TEV Miesbach
Sept. 20 at Erding Gladiators
Sept. 22 (opponents to be confirmed)

SC Riessersee 3
Ritten/Renon Sport 1

This was the season opener for Ritten. They are hosting the Bisons in their tournament next weekend. Former Jet Chris Mason was tending the goal for the first two periods during which the Germans mounted a 3-0 lead. Two of those goals came on a 5 minute major. At least that's what I picked up from the translations. Riessersee is from the DEL2.

The remainder of Ritten's pre-season looks like this:

Aug. 31 Ritten Sport v Neumarkt/Egna Wild Geese (INL)
Sept. 1 Ritten Sport v Fischtown (DEL2) or Manitoba Bisons
Sept. 3 Ritten Sport v Dartmouth (NCAA)
Sept. 7 Ritten Sport v SC Riessersee (DEL2)
Sept. 13 Ritten Sport v Bad Tölz (OBL)
Sept. 15 Bad Tölz (OBL) v Ritten Sport

Too bad the Bisons couldn't have played Dartmouth so as to add a 5th game.

Starbulls Rosenheim 8
Deggendorfer Fire 1

This game was not part of Rosenheim's previously announced schedule. Deggendorfer is from the Oberliga, Germany's 3rd tier league. By the early results it would appear that there is quite a difference between the Oberliga and the DEL2. Tyler McNeely and Shawn Weller each scored again for the Starbulls. Rosenheim is now 2-1-1 and their next game is Tuesday against the Bisons.

Fischtown Pinguins 7
Hannover Scorpions 1

Fischtown won beat Hannover, another Oberliga team, for the 2nd time this year. The Pinguins are now 3-0-0 in the pre-season. Next up for them is the Ritten tournament, and a Saturday game against the Manitoba Bisons.

Aug. 27: Rosenheim 7 Manitoba 1

MANITOBA BISONS 1
ROSENHEIM STARBULLS 7

The Bisons started their European vacation on a sour note. The first thing to jump out at me was that the Bisons had a very weak line-up dressed. From last year's starters in the playoffs, they had only one defenceman and 5 forwards dressed. I do not know if they had some injuries or if loads of guys failed to make the trip, or just droped out. IAE, the Bisons dressed only 16 skaters, when European rules allow 20. And one of those dressed was Bison assistant coach Riley Dudar!

I followed along at the Pointstreak link, which is very much like LeagueStat. There were two jersey numbers listed as "New Player". One turned out to be Dudar and the other was Pierre Landry, an unannounced newcomer on defence. He has transferred from Briercrest and previously played for the Wayway Wolverines in the MJHL. Here was the line-up (the line combos were not given):

GOAL:
1 Joe Caligiuri - 34 Deven Dubyk - 35 Joey Rewucki

DEFENCE:
12 Brock Sutherland - 24 Travis Bobbee
5 Lee Christensen - 6 Luke Paulsen
3 Pierre Landry

FORWARDS:
20 Aaron Lewadniuk - 19 Ian DuVal - 21 Taylor Dickin
18 Dylan Kelly - 25 Paul Ciarelli - 16 Jesse Paradis
15 Craig Scott - 10 Brendan Rowinski - 17 Austin Lauder
22 Riley Dudar - 28 Reid MacLeod

MIA:
22 Darren Bestland - 2 Dane Crowley
3 Eric Mestery - 4 Jeremy Schappert
6 Brodie Melnychuk
29 Luke Cain - #? Jordan Depape - 26 Blair Macaulay

The players listed under "MIA" are eligible to return. Depape is the only new recruit in that list. What are the rest doing?

Other than Landry, other unannounced newcomers to suit up were Joey Rewucki (goaltender from the Selkirk Steelers of the MJHL) and Reid MacLeod (forward from Sacred Heart of the NCAA who red-shirted and played for the Stonewall Flyers last year).

Travis Bobbee started the scoring after 5 minutes, but that was it for the Bisons. Each goaltender played a period, Caligiuri started and was succeeded by Dubyk and Rewucki.

None of the summaries include shots on goal, so it is hard to glean just what kind of a game it was. The score was only 2-1 after 36 minutes of play. Then two quick 2nd period goals by the Starbulls gave them a stranglehold.

These teams started the 2011 tour as well. Rosenheim also had a 4-1 lead after two periods that night, only to lose in a shootout.

The Bisons' next game is Thursday against EHC Klostersee. Rosenheim will not play until Friday against the Sterzing Broncos.

A special guest at the game was Karl Friesen, goaltender and formerly of the West Kildonan North Stars and St. Boniface Mohawks. He also played 12 seasons for Rosenheim and for the German (or West German) national team in 6 world championships and 3 Olympic games (1984, 1988, and 1992). He also had a cup of coffee with the New Jersey Devils (pre-Brodeur).

Aug. 28: Bison Practice

So I popped in at the Max Bell to take my son skating and instead of public skating there was "Bison Men's Practice" on the board. Since it was so hot outside we wanted to check out the ice and, indeed, there was a Bison men's hockey practice, featuring 2 goaltenders and 9 skaters. That explains the short-staffed squad in Europe. I could not identify everybody. But Blair Macaulay and Dane Crowley had numbers on their helmets making them identifiable. I also thought I saw alumni Chris Benias out there. How many short guys with a #17 helmet are out there? There should be plenty of competition for spots when the two camps come together.

Aug. 29: Bisons 5 Klostersee 2

According to the Klostersee website, the last word on the game was cancelled due to an ice plant problem. However, on the Bison site they have the score without any link to a story or summary. A web search revealed nothing. Klostersee is on Pointsreak for regular season only. So I am unable to say what the Bisons did and if they remain short-staffed.

The Ritten tournament produced a pair of exciting games on day one. The Bisons were featured in the opener. I have thus far been unable to locate a line-up or a proper summary. However several links have listed the scorers:

1:0 (08.) FPB Martinelli PP
2:0 (10.) FPB Kopecky
2:1 (11.) UMB Dickin
3:1 (13.) FPB Fatyka
3:2 (15.) UMB Ciarelli PP
4:2 (23.) FPB McPherson
4:3 (39.) UMB MacLeod
5:3 (40.) FPB Dejdar
5:4 (48.) UMB Dickin
5:5 (51.) UMB Lewadniuk PP
6:5 (65.) FPB Cook SO

So, 4 of the 5 Bison goals were scored by newcomers. The result also shows improvement from the opening game against Rosenheim, who are ranked at the same level as Fischtown.

From Ritten:
Quote:
In the afternoon, the North Germans met the college boys from Manitoba and saw a long time like the sure winner from. But the guys at the University team managed at a brisk game even the 5:5 compensation, before they had to admit defeat after extra time in the shootout.
From Fischtown:
Quote:
The penguin did very hard against the young, hungry Canadian bottom line. Although the Bremerhaven were optically far superior. But in the last third tore the thread. The Penguin gave a 5-3 lead out of hand and escaped with difficulty into the shootout. Here redeemed Brendan Cook and his colleagues transformed attempt.

Two weeks before the start of the DEL-II match of the season, the penguin was already very well regarded. The washer ran smoothly, the setting was right. However, there were still one or other negligence on the defensive, were punished by the bison with goals against.
From SportNews.bz:
Quote:
In the second semi-final, the penguin doing heavy expects al against the young Canadians of Manitoba Bsons. DEL2 the club was in the final period a 5-3 lead out of hand and escaped with difficulty into the shootout. Here Brendan Cook scored but still the decisive goal for the North Germans.

The hosts from Ritten fell behind the Wild Geese by 3-0 before mounting a comeback and winning in overtime. Travis Ramsay set up the two goals which started the comeback.

Sunday's games will see the Bisons face the Wild Geese for 3rd place, followed by the Pinguins against Ritten for 1st place.

The Evil Monkeys announced two more recruits - forward Jamie Crooks (Victoria) and goaltender Luke Siemens (Prince Albert).

The Bisons have played many things.

They have played several types of animals, like Monkeys, Pronghorns, Beavers, Badgers, Bears, and Mavericks.

And mythological ones like Thunderbirds and Griffins, and extinct ones like Dinosaurs.

Not to forget birds like Ooks and Hawks, or canines like Thunderwolves and two kinds of Huskies.

The felines have been abundant, including Bobcats, Lions, Tigers, and two colours of Cougars. They even played two colours: Reds and Blues.

In a celestial sense they have faced North Stars, Starbulls, and once even Cyclones.

For people they have faced Nor'Westers and Wesmen, Fighting Sioux and Redmen, 99ers, Trojans, Patriotes, and even Cannibals.

Transportation modes have also been encountered, like Clippers and Trucks. They once faced the Jets, and later the Mooses.

But until today they had never faced Gooses!

None of the links tells much about the Bison game. They were down 0-2 early then scored to go into the 1st intermission down 1-2. They then dominated the 2nd (with 2 goals) and 3rd (with 3 goals) periods. Italian hockey is short on statistical links so I may never find the line-ups, goaltenders, or even scorers for the tour.

In the end, the Bisons go 2-1-1 on the tour. Even when short staffed, they should beat teams from the OBL and INL (which they did) and have tight games against the DEL2 (which they did in Saturday's shootout against Fischtown). Now the Euro tourists will come home and join the group training at the Max Bell.

As for the tournament opponents, Neumarkt/Egna are happy that they went to overtime against Ritten/Renon, a team from a higher league. Fischtown had two wins in shootouts. It seems that Ritten/Renon is also happy with Chris Mason, Travis Ramsay, and their other new recruits, who all played key roles.

The Bisons next play in Hillbillyland where the bulk of the CW teams will converge for a mix-match of exhibition games. Actually, it would be nice to be able to see so many teams in one venue. The Herd will face the Bedrock Boys on Friday, Sept. 13 and the Evil Monkeys on Saturday, Sept. 14.

The home debut will be against the Regina Cougars on Sept. 20-21 with 2:00 p.m. starts both days. The pre-season will conclude with home games against the Toronto Varsity Blues on Sept. 27-28.

Blair MacAulay has signed with the Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL. Former X-Man Nick Pageau also plays for them.

Not too familiar with the Bisons, but was he expected back this season? If so that is a huge loss this close to the start of the season.

Sept. 4: Macaulay Goes Pro, Domestic Pre-Season Begins

Blair Macaulay, the Bisons' top scorer, and one of the best players in the CIS, has signed a pro deal. He and his brother, Scott Macaulay, are headed off to the Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL, an Edmonton Oilers affiliate. Both played for the Winnipeg Saints. Thereafter, Scott went to the NCAA and Blair to the WHL.

The quote tells just how good he was:
Quote:
Macaulay played four seasons (2009-13) at Manitoba and was selected as a two-time Canada West men’s hockey MVP during 2011-12 and 2012-13 season – only the second player in the award's 35-year history to win the award in consecutive seasons. The Winnipeg native had a very successful career with the Bisons and his accolades included being named a 2012-13 CIS First Team All-Canadian, 2011-12 CIS Second Team All-Canadian, being named Canada West First Team All-Star in three consecutive seasons (2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13) and part of the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets 2012 Development Camp roster.
What it does not say is that he started as a 4th-liner and penalty killer and quickly moved his way up in the order. Check out the Elite Prospects stats page. The 23 goals in 28 regular season games in 2011-12 was quite incredible.

I saw him at a Bison workout during the team's European tour. However, I also believe I saw Chris Benias and perhaps other former Bisons there as well. Whether the team thought he might return is something I just don't know.

The Bisons' next games are in Regina where they will face Bedrock on Friday, September 13 and the Evil Monkeys on Saturday, September 14.

Sept. 6: Monkeys win, More recruiting news

The Selkirk Steelers website announced that their former goaltender Joey Rewucki is attending the U of M on a scholarship. I did see his name on the roster/stats pages when the Bisons faced Rosenheim (see post from Aug. 27th) and posted his stats.
Quote:
The Selkirk Steelers announce that former goaltender Joey Rewucki has accepted a scholarship to play for the University of Manitoba Bison's men’s hockey team for the upcoming 2013-2014 season.

Rewucki, originally from East St. Paul was an original draft pick of the Steelers and played four years starting with the 2008/09 season. During his time with the Steelers, Rewucki played in 168 games compiling a 3.22 goals against average and a career .911 save %. He was a three time all-star, Steelers MVP in 2010 and was twice nominated by the MJHL for the leagues top goaltender.
And, the GoBisons.ca website is being renovated. One effect is that bookmarked links to specific pages no longer work. It appears that they are trying to add content to the new site bit-by-bit. The site is one of those awkward new ones where your screen is full of banners and menus that appear and vanish and basically just leave room for an inch of actual content to be visible at any one time. Compare new to the really old one and see which had the better utility.

All I have is the score and that the Monkeys' scorers were Sean Ringrose (with 2), Ian Barteaux, and Johnny Lazo. I have the link for the CW schedule page in case stats or a story are uploaded.

Team Bedrock also announced (presumably) their final batch of recruits:
• Dylan Walchuk • 5'10" 170 Ibs. • Forward • McBride, B.C. Spokane (WHL)
• Adam Kambeitz • 6'0" 196 Ibs. • Forward • Coaldale, Alta. Seattle (WHL)
• Jordan Messier • 6'2" 195 Ibs. • Forward • Canmore, Alta. Moose Jaw (WHL)
• Myles Hovdebo • 6'1" 174 Ibs. • Goaltender • Swift Current, Sask. • La Ronge (SJHL)

Meanwhile, Augustana beat Battlefords (SJHL) 5-2.

Sept. 7: Monkeys sweep Dinos

As with game 1, all we have is a list of scorers from the Monkeys' site: Brett Ferguson, Torrie Dyck and Thomas Carr. So now the records of the three teams to see action so far are:
Alberta 3-0-0
Manitoba 2-1-1
Calgary 0-2-0

There was also a piece in the Edmontown Examiner on new Monkey goaltender Luke Siemens. Although he has great credentials, it is hard to see him improving the Monkey goaltending. Kurtis Mucha stole games for them last year, including one memorable night in Manitoba.

There is no announcement yet from Sask on their recruits. However, we get word from Fort Mac that one of the Keyano Huskies' goaltenders is shifting to another pack of mutts. Matthew Smidt is shifting from remote Alberta to the Spitoon. BTW, Sask's site really sucks.

Links:

I also came across a piece on Yahoo about the CIS's improved exposure in general. Cited are:
1. CIS TV Deal with Sportsnet.
2. Sportsnet 360 Web Coverage (see http://www.sportsnet.ca/cis/).
3. Investment in free, live streaming.
4. Partnerships with community teams (an example is the Bisons-Bombers).
5. Brand Power.

I will have to see how Sportsnet's CIS page covers hockey this year. Right now the football coverage looks pretty good.

This used to be an annual fixture so it is good to see it back. And the Monkeys beat the Greasers, so score one for the CIS. Then again, it was ONLY the Greasers. BTW, the Greasers only had 2 shots on goal in the 3rd period. The Mobnkeys are throwing feces in celebration as they are now 4-0-0 in the exhibition season.

The Flames outshot the Dinos 35-29 in what sems to have been a free-wheeling game. The difference in the game was that the Flames were 4-for-8 on the PP. The Dinos are now 0-3-0 in the pre-season.

Regina was supposed to travel to Weyburn to face the Red Wings on Sept. 10. However, there is nothing about the game on either the U of R or Weyburn sites. Weyburn's Twitter reminded of the game at 12:58 pm. It was listed on the SJHL LeagueStat games, but none of those have scores or links. My assumption? Banjoland ran out of electricity. But Regina is hosting 6 of 8 CW teams this weekend. That would be nice to see. I would love tio sit through 3 hockey games per day.

Weekend Preview: All Roads Lead to Regina

Links:
:. [U of M Site] :. [Bison Roster Page]
:. [CW Schedule Page (with links)]
:. [Canada West Annual Magazine]
:. [CIS Repost of U of A Story]
:. [Cougar Roster Page]
:. [Alberta Site] :. [Calgary Site]
:. [Lethbridge Site] :. [Sask Site]

The Bisons are off to Regina where they will not play the Cougars, nor any team from Banjoland. Instead they will face two teams from Saudi Alberta (Bedrock and the Evil Monkeys) on neutral ice. The Banjo-Mutts and H0rny Ones will also be there. The weekend schedule is:

Friday, Sept. 13
2:00 – Regina vs. Saskatchewan
5:00 – Alberta vs. Lethbridge
8:00 – Calgary vs. Manitoba

Saturday, Sept. 14
12:00 – Regina vs. Lethbridge
3:00 – Alberta vs. Manitoba
6:00 – Calgary vs. Saskatchewan

Sunday, Sept. 15
10:30 – Regina vs. Alberta
1:30 – Calgary vs. Lethbridge

There is not much in pre-event information to share at this point. The U of M site, since being re-minted, has no updates and in fact has lost the story on Macaulay turning pro and the scores from their European tour.

This makes it time for an annual rant: Why don't CIS teams get their websites going in advance of the pre-season? Should they not have training camp rosters available? Could they not have even a small story on the opening weekend? This would be an easy first step towards getting media coverage in their local marketplaces.

Here's where the websites stand:

Manitoba - The roster page has deleted all 5th year players from last year. It still includes last year's 3rd and 4th years who graduated and does not include any new recruits. Before the website was "modernized" the schedule page had the scores from the European tour. Those have been removed and they have not even added a story on the tour. The roster page does tell us that Tyler Dittmer is now a conditioning coach, along with Riley Dudar.

Alberta - The schedule page has a link to a linescore of each game so far, and a story on the Oiler game. Their roster page is not available yet.

Calgary and Lethbridge - The schedule pages are updated but are without links (which may change this weekend. The roster pages are 2012-13.

Regina - They have their 2013-14 roster looking complete. They have 8 defencemen listed, which after being short-handed last year will be a luxury. The schedule page deleted a previously scheduled game with Weyburn but appears up-to-date.

Saskatchewan - I do not know what their site is doing. When you go there you get all their players' dopey faces but no actual site. So who knows. They must be wiping their butts on the carpet again.

This was the first CIS exhibition game of the season outside of those involving CW teams. The McGilligutties led 6-2 at one time, and had a massive edge on the shot clock as well. But the Bees scrambled back to make the score respectable, at least.

Fun fact: The Bees have two players named "Hugo". Can any other hockey team make that claim?
