And I disagree, as well as many Avs fans. Where do we go from here?

Cool story. I don't want to discuss the EJ trade, especially because it definitely wasn't the reason for the Avs slump, but I suggest you figure out how that trade really went down. It wasn't Shatty + Stewart for EJ.

Patience. Soon. Coach and GM gone this summer, #1 pick on the way, etc.

Matt Duchene
Gabriel Landeskog
Ryan O'Reilly
P-A Parenteau
Paul Stastny (???)
Steve Downie
Jamie McGinn

Seth Jones
Erik Johnson
Tyson Barrie
Duncan Siemens
Stefan Elliott

Semyon Varlamov
Calvin Pickard
Sami Aittokallio

The core is there, need to keep developing and improving. A proper coach will obviously help.

If you're comparing them to the 90s, the salary cap happened.

2. "Throw money at the players"?! What money? Avs are 22nd in spending on players in the 30 team league.

3. Where did I mention Arsenal? Besides, if you knew anything about Arsenal, you would know that they have been in the top 4 of the BPL for 16 consecutive seasons. Does that sound like a "fail"?!?!

Pretty much, you go and try to replace the likes of Foppa, Foote, Blake etc with a pretty much empty prospect pool.

Avs were one of the top spending teams in the league from the moment he took over right until the time Joe Sakic retired and they entered the rebuild. Last time I checked you don't throw money at mediocre players just to stay afloat, well you do if you're the Calgary Flames and look how well that's working out for them.

I know you Arsenal fans whine about Kroenke all the time and quite frankly most of the whining is horribly misplaced, as Arsenal started to go downhill (by downhill I mean that they went from a constant threat to win the title to an aftertought when it comes to pre season favourites) before Kroenke got there.

They're going to be relevant again real soon. Duchene, Landeskog, O'Reilly and Johnson with Seth Jones on the way - that's a nice collection of talented young players. They'll make noise in the coming years for sure.

Steady decline is what matters. Not status quo or improvement.....decline.

The only real issue for Arsenal are past couple of years, time when elite players were sold, and not appropriately replaced, so no, downhill IS with Kroenke. I don't need anyone telling me what kind of owner he is, it's painfully obvious.

Inept management and inept coaching. Hand in hand with that is inept trading. Poor all around.

I'm not really sure what they'd be missing if they manage to get Jones. They could be primed for a meteoric rise with maybe a couple decent vet FAs and a smart coach.

So many good young players, I just don't get it.

4th for Winnik = win for Avs

Gali + Winnik for McGinn + Scarbossa = win for Avs

Shattenkirk + Stewart + Rattie? for EJ + McClement + Siemens = Blues winning atm but still tbd.

Quincey for 1st for Downie = win for Avs

1st (Forsberg traded for Erat) + 2nd for Varlamov = win for Avs

Liles for 2nd = lose for Avs

Those are just my opinion, but Shermy has done a decent job trade wise.

Winner.

In all reality, it was a bunch of things happening at once.

Their entire core was becoming old and washed up. From the 1st line to 4th and D and G, all were getting older.

They didn't have the prospects or players to replace those top line guys so they've been filling the voids that all of those greats have left with 2nd liners at best for nearly a decade now.

Granato and Sacco have also taken up too much of our time behind the bench.

It's time for a turn around next year or the year after. The pieces are falling into place, those 1st line players are actually first line talents and the defense is getting nicely rounded out.

EDIT: Also, I think they've been far too timid to let their young guys play, even recently. Usually signing veteran presences that can't keep up in the new NHL. The amount of time it took Barrie to get full time minutes was embarrassing while Zanon was out there fumbling the puck like he had flubber tape on his stick.

Decent vets on the back end will be an important one. When your list of key defencemen includes 4 rookies or near rookies, you definitely need to shore that up.

Seth Jones
Erik Johnson
Tyson Barrie
Duncan Siemens
Stefan Elliott

Add two legit top 4 defenders and a coach and they're likely in the playoffs next year.

Hejda was pretty decent this year I suppose, for what it's worth.

Well said.
I think this team is in a good position. They have top line talent, not only that but real character guys. They will have some good pieces to work with in trades if needed. I feel like the RoR saga was just a huge distraction , it will be interesting to see where they go with that.
They will likely have the last 2 defensemen taken overall yeh? I think this team will be very fun to watch very soon.

Forgot about Hejda. I think the Avs probably want to have at least one solid veteran per pairing, and unless Jones lights the world on fire, I don't think any of the youngsters are ready for top pairing duty, so the two solid veterans idea probably stands.
