Caps with powerplay for final two minutes of the game, full possession basically the entire time and don't shoot the puck. Gross PP to end the game.
They took a page out of Montreal PK strategy from 2010 - cover Ovechkin and Green with man-on-man to eliminate their shots and then the other Capitals' player become lost on how to take advantage of the resulting 3-on-2.
Man Pavel Datsyuk was a man possessed in the last half of that Wings game. Unreal puck possession, able to deke/battle through 2-3 players at a time. Sniped the game-tying goal at an incredible angle with ridiculous velocity late in the third. Absolutely schooled Beachemin twice on the same shift with a hit and a hit-evasion. Unbelievable to watch.
Anyone notice how Jonathan Ericsson has rounded into a top-pairing defenseman? He's literally the Wings' #1 defenseman right now - better than Kronwall in his own zone and moving the puck with confidence and poise. Who would have thought the last overall pick from 2003 would emerge like this.
Brendan Smith is also a godsend for that team on the blue line. Unbelievable poise in the offensive zone today on the blue line. Justin Schultz-like. Amazing how Wisconsin is pumping out defensemen like that.
For all of us clamoring about how our future is bright - how about the Red Wings? That team has introduced about 6-7 rookies this season and not only made the playoffs, but are holding their own against the #2 seed. Nyqvist, Andersson, Brunner (leading scorer), Smith, Dekeyser,Lashoff are all rookies playing key roles for that team.
And let's not forget Jakub Kindl (3rd year player) and Cory Emmerton (2nd year player). Suddenly 4th year player Justin Abdelkader is a grizzled veteran on that team.
