The argument isn't about him being "elite," it's about him being "the best player in the league since the lockout." I've yet to see an argument for Datsyuk there that doesn't give him bonus points for a championship.
So now you're making up a time frame when both Lidstrom and Zetterberg didn't play at a high level. One a took a step a back with age and the other was battling a back injury? Again when was this mythical 2-3 year time frame? Because the previous 3 seasons Zetterberg put up 70, 80 and 69pts and played in 74, 80 and 82 games in those 3 seasons. Meaning he played in 236 of 246 games during those 3 seasons (96%). He was also a point per game player in the playoffs. Lidstrom's 2nd last season (10-11) he won his 7th Norris trophy. He was also 9th, 2nd and 28th among dmen in scoring those 3 seasons.

Btw it was Datsyuk that was the one out for an extended period in the last 2-3 years. In the 10-11 season he had a broken hand and only played in 56gms. Zetterberg, on the other hand, played in 80gms that year.

I get it, you don't like that some consider Datsyuk the best in the game.

2011 marked the first time Lidstrom wasn't first in SHTOI on the Wings blueline. That Norris win was also the most controversial in his career, because it was his first minus season in addition to the reduction in his role for the first time in his career.

As for Zetterberg, he clearly played at a lower level in the '11 and '12 playoffs than from 08-09, whether I'm attributing it correctly to a back injury or not is less important than the fact that he wasn't as good.

And Zetterberg was the one who, in the eyes of Wings fans, had noticeably declined due to injuries.

No, I'm legitimately bewildered at the criteria they use to come to that conclusion and would enjoy further explanation.

There we go. Franson with a stunner. I think that went right under Chara's arm.

Root for overtime. A long one. That leaves both teams so tired they forfeit the next round.

Man, Del Zotto has been absolutely brutal throughout this series, lucky for them they have Girardi and McD to play against the Ovechkin line the vast majority of the time. The whole Caps team is charging on every hit, especially Ovechkin, it's quite funny. Lundqvist is playing great as usual.

The only reason I am fine with Toronto winning over Boston... is in the hopes that Chiarelli does something stupid like fire Julien, or trade Krejci, or any other move that is an overreaction to losing in the 1st round

Oh look at that, you play with passion and enthusiasm and anything can happen. Too bad the Sabres can't do that.

Could care less who wins leafs/bruins. But damn it all if the Caps lose. Then there will be another series I could care less about in the next round.

Nah, I think they should put the press on Shero. MAF is a mess -- not that I'm all that interested even in getting him back in return, but I'm sure Miller being Miller would be a better starter scenario than MAF being MAF.
