A lot.

Given that he signed an 8-year extension this year, I'd say he's in our long term plans.

5.75MM Cap hit through 2021 for 45 pts/season? Not sure Winnipeg takes that on, especially seeing as we have multiple RFAs due for big raises this offseason. Don't see it happening strictly from a "we're stuck with this guy and his cap hit for years" standpoint.

This deal wouldn't make much sense for either side.

I'll just say that I'd consider to send Zajac + legit prospect (Gelinas looks NHL ready and he's nothing but my favorite Devils prospect) to get Wheeler in return.

Not sure if that'd make sense from a WPG point of view.

Indeed it doesn't make much sense from Winnipeg's point of view. As shallow as we are at centre, we are more shallow at RW. I don't see Wheeler going anywhere unless there is a young top 6 RW coming back.

not moving.

I also love when posters who don't watch a player just comment on their point totals.

It makes a ton of sense for the Jets. Gives them added size, defensive ability, and skill down the middle, and a hometown boy who wouldn't sulk after being traded here just because it's Winnipeg.

As for the Devils, it would work if they wanted to get out of a hefty commitment to a player giving them diminishing returns.

You know how many championship teams are built from the right side across? None. You win by being strong down the middle, and until the Jets have that, they're not getting off the tarmac.

I'd pull the trigger on a "Wheeler for Zajac plus prospect" deal. Zajac and Merrill, maybe?

Thanks for the reply. Wheeler is a hell of a top 6 winger and Ladd is one of the most underrated player in the league. Been thinking this for years.

Merrill could be something special like a complete package all-around force but your proposition is still very tempting to me. Wheeler is legit and I also love his game.

Tough choice man.

Id hold on to Zajac. I really hope he hits his 60pts seasons again and have faith in him to do it. enough not to trade him away

Zajac to the Wild for Granlund. Wild get a 2nd line center behind Koivu. Devil's get a prospect with a lot of upside.

So the team that has to give up its first next year, goes into rebuild?

1) doesn't change the fact that that's how many points he gets
2) there is obviously more to a player than points, see Bryan Little, Andrew Ladd (who is now getting points)
3) Other Devils fans aren't happy with Zajac or his contract, and some cite his points as a reason

who cares about labels?

he contributes to the team when hes not scoring. hes probably overpaid, yes. who cares? would the Devils be better off with him walking for nothing then keeping him for a bit of an overpayment?

I see alot of these thread, where people are like " what would it take to get X on our team???" then most subsequent comments are about why X is not as good as he should be and not worth much

The comments saying why X isn't any good are a way of saying that we don't want him on our team. What would it take to get Olli Jokinen and his 4.5MM cap hit on your team? Winnipeg would have to send someone else for the bag of pucks

I meant that since Zajac is in the Devils' long term plans, his cost wouldn't make it worth it for the Jets. He'd be pretty expensive.

speaking of little, how likely is he to re-sign long term this offseason? he and zajac actually remind me a lot of each other in that they're both underrated around the league, but at the same time both seem like they should put up better numbers than they do based on their physical talents and hockey sense.

If Lou didnt want a hefty commitment , he wouldnt have penned the 8 year deal. if Lou has that kind of faith in him, its faaar to soon to contemplate trading. the new contract hasnt even started yet
