Amnesty buyouts

How do you guys think we should use these? We have guys that most fans agree need to go like Zanon, Jones, maybe even Hunwick and O'Brien..

I'm thinking about the options that are available. Waivers, trading, amnesty buyout..

Ideas?

you really think the Kroenke's are gonna pay someone to not play for them in the NHL?

i don't. i don't even think PL would even if the owner wanted to.

Amnesty both Greg Zanon and Matt Hunwick. While I am of the belief that David Jones is the worst player in the entire league and even worse than a lot of AHL players, I don't see anybody ready to step into the 3rd line RW role, so he needs to stay, unless management has enough faith in Palushaj to play him regularly which I would like to see, no more of this "Play 5 solid games, get benched for 5" Sacco crap

???-Duchene-Parenteau
Laneskog-O'Reilly-Downie
McGinn-Stastny-Jones (Palushaj if Jones gets bought out)
Malone-Mitchell-McLeod

Jones-Johnson
Wilson-Barrie
Hejda-Elliott

Maybe we can get something for Hunwick in a trade though given how he played this season. But in saying this, I doubt the Kroenke's want to pay for players who won't be here

We're already saving boatloads by no longer footing Eric LaCroix's restaurant tabs.

I don't see any buyouts this summer. If Jones plays like crap again next year, and nobody will take him for free, then I expect him to be bought out. Somebody will take one of our depth defensemen on the cheap when the time comes to fit Jones in the lineup.

Possible options (in order of likelihood, IMO):

1. Shane O'Brien
Cap Hit: $2.00 M
Expires: 2015

2. David Jones
Cap Hit: $4.00 M
Expires: 2016

3. Greg Zanon
Cap Hit: $2.25 M
Expires: 2014

4. Matt Hunwick
Cap Hit: $1.60 M
Expires: 2014

--

I still don't see us buying anybody out, though.

I don't see the panic in buying out Jones this summer. Yes, his contract is awful. But he has some serious sniper skills and I'm excited to see him under a new coach in a new season. We still have the amnest buyout next season so why not give him another year instead of writing him off after one bad season. (A half a season as well)

Edit: We have no cap issues this summer either. Next year, however, we have to re-sign a bunch of players and maybe need to buy him out.

I am aware that he ballooned a bit, but I'm pretty sure that I'd seen a recent photo of him in the Executive suite next to Sakic, and he looked like he'd slimmed down quite a bit

I don't expect Avs to use their amnesty buyout this summer.

If David Jones has a disastrous season next year, perhaps next summer.

I think they'll try to move a contract and possibly eat some salary but I can't see them buying players out.

I feel like Jones can still be a 30 goal scorer if he was as committed as Duchene was last off season.

I hope he brings it next season.

if he got up back to 20 i'd be happy, he was on pace for what 6 goals this year? even dion phanuef didn't take a step back this bad when he got his contract with the flames.

The biggest problem area is the defense. We have young guys like Barrie and Elliot breaking into the roster. If we pick Jones in the draft there's a good chance he's getting some playing time. We should also look for a decent D in free agency.

I don't see room any room for guys like Zanon

Assuming we make the playoffs next year, Zanon's shot-blocking will be very nice to have. Out of SOB, Hunwick and Zanon, I Don't know who would be the guy to keep as the 7th D-man. They all bring something different and all have glaring weaknesses.

Isn't the amnesty buyout only avaliable for this past offseason and this next one?

Yes. This summer and the next one. You can use two in total. (Briere and Bryz for Philly for example)

You can use both this summer or both next summer as well. Or split them.

I don't see us doing this. I hate Hunwick more than anyone, but I am fine if he is our 6th or 7th defenceman.

I agree that something needs to be done, but I don't see us taking this route.

We aren't really in need of buying out anyone except Jones in next summer if he sucks again this year. Zanon/SOB/Hunwick are guys who can easily be traded/waived.

Jones is the only guy who might need an amnesty buyout to move. But I don't see them going that route.

Hunwick IMO is still moveable, it'll just be for a low pick or worthless prospect.

Zanon just seems like too inexpensive and insubstantial a player to do that with. Just waive him, send him down, enjoy the $900K in cap relief, let him have fun in Cleveland for a year, and cut him loose. Better to just stomach the contract rather than stretch the payments out another year. Hell, maybe someone will take the contract off our hands via waivers! Probably not though.

Players I do see possibly getting an amnesty buyout: Lecavalier, Malone, Bryzgalov, Leino, Wisniewski, Luongo, DiPietro, and maybe even Hossa if the Hawks find themselves in another cap crunch.

Jones and O'Brien are the only ones that make sense because they have multiple years left on their contracts, but I want to give Jones another year.

What they do with O'Brien will be interesting because he didn't have a good year, and they might not want him in the locker room after the Vegas talk, considering he's a likely candidate to run off the Vegas. Oh yeah, and we have 5 other bottom pairing defensemen.

I don't think they will buy out anyone. If it was up to me I'd buy out SOB this summer and Jones next year if he doesn't pick it up.
