Saw Bill Guerin talking to Randy Cunneyworth after the game. It was pretty cool!
What were the lines?

1 + 1 for Ruhwedel. Catenacci got the primary helper on Locke's OT winner. Varone with Rochester's other goal. Both Lieuwen and Knapp gave up a goal.

Ruhwedel was the best player on the ice.

McNabb needs to stop being so afraid to shoot the puck. From what I saw last night he's still extremely hesitant when he gets a good look at the point, and either waits way too long to shoot and it gets blocked, or he just has to dump it to someone else. Didn't he win hardest shot in the AHL skills competition last year? Just let it rip already.

Saw the same thing. He passes up every open shot he gets. He'll hesitate, then turn the puck over after he tries forcing a play. One of the biggest shots in the league, and he refuses to use it.

Not sure why Kevin O is convinced we don't have an enforcer. Yes, Johnny McGuire is a rookie, but he was one of the toughest kids in the OHL.

It probably has to do more with his less than imposing stature than his rookie status. Although, that probably plays a part, too.

Probably because he's never going to play.

I thought the same thing about John Scott for the shortened season last year.

Totally different situations. Scott had a spot on the team and NHL experience. McGuire is probably 19th on the forward depth chart. The Amerks would have to be decimated before he plays any regular season games for them.

Given that spots in Rochester open up both when Sabres get hurt (and make callups) as well as Rochester injuries, that chances of McGuire getting some action though is very good. Especially given the Sabres luck with injuries.

If the team needs an enforcer in the game, he jumps up the depth chart.

Eh, he's not Tarnasky though -- a guy who wasn't just a situational player for the Amerks last year -- he's a kid who has to show he can play a regular shift and not hurt them night to night while doing a job as a protector. McGuire can chuck though -- it'll be interesting to see if he can show something as a player and not just a fighter.

Several have said that Riouxweadle was the best player on the ice... Anyone else?

What I don't really get is why we are trying to develop an enforcer out of juniors, when there should be plenty of proven alternatives left? Btw McGuire isn't officially signed yet either, is he?

Rochester Americans ‏@AmerksHockey 12 Sep
The #Amerks have signed forward Johnny McGuire to a one-year #AHL contract.

Eh, how many enforcers are situational players and play a regular shift?

He won't hurt the team much playing 4 minutes a night. I don't think he will be a -21.

I bet they told him they will help him improve his hockey skills and skating so he can eventually be more than just a few minutes player.

Tarnasky and Deveaux are both solid tough-guys who can contributory roles when not just chucking the mitts. I'm measureing against that sort of player.

As for McGuire himself, for his role, he's a game kid and thickly built. He initiates his protecting, which I personally like.

I think this kid will make the fans forget about Tarnasky. There are other vets now that can fill NT's non-enforcer roles.

Good to see Tarnasky win his fight against Chris Neil in the preseason.

No chance. Tarnasky could fight and play at a high level. McGuire isn't scoring 15+ goals.

And again, he'll barely play. He won't play more than 10 games with the Amerks this year.

I'll bet that he'll have more fights (17) than Tarnasky last year. A lot of fans love fighting. He doesn't need to score any of Tarnasky's 15 goals (other players will) or have his -21.

In the ECHL, yes. Not in Rochester.

If I remember correctly, didn't a lot of Rochester fans want Tarnasky out of the lineup last year when there were more vets than vet spots available? I thought I remembered mention that he was taking too many dumb penalties that were costing the team. I was never a fan of what Tarnasky was a part of in Russia the year prior, but he definitely proved himself to be more than a cheap-shoting goon last year.

It was more that he was getting a lot of power play time but not really doing anything (i.e. Luke Adam-ing). I think Tarnasky wore down as the year went on. I think something like 13 fights before the lockout ended and 5 after.
