Chris Tanev plays with a cigarette in his mouth everytime he's on the ice.

How can you take your career as an athlete seriously and smoke?

This, you really can't...you would not be at your full ability.

I know Guy Lafleur used to smoke a pack or two a day. Here's a great story for you as well:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/201...key/index.html

Quote:
Keenan, no saint but never a smoker, was shocked.

"I had just come from Philadelphia, where there really weren't a lot of guys who smoked," he says. "But I walk in and see those ashtrays everywhere, and the first thing I told the guys was: 'OK, no more smoking in the dressing room. If you gotta smoke, do it out in the hallway.' So I'm coaching my first exhibition game and I go into the dressing room after the first period to talk, and there's no one in there. I'm wondering what in hell is going on, and take a walk out to the other side of the hallway and the whole team is out there, smoking cigarettes."

Anyone smoking is bad enough, but athletes?

Always been a bug bear of mine. People only continue to smoke to remove a craving you don't get if you don't start in the first place. What a way to waste 10% of your salary.

Sarcasm aside, it wouldn't really be that damaging. Occasional alcohol or marijuana use wouldn't have a noticeable effect on your performance.

Smoking is still huge in the military, so I'd assume that it's possible to perform at a high level while you smoke regularly.

Some of the comments in this thread are laughable and obviously discredited by other comments. Best of them - people in the military smoked and Mario smoked. It's not like, even if you smoke regularily, you will be wheezing down the ice. it just doesn't matter that much

LOL this is always something I've wanted to know. I would bet you that every single NHL'er, except for Crosby and Rafalski, probably tried it out at least

This kind of thread pops up way too often. Closing due to high risk of libelous claims.
