Proposal - Hard Shot !

To OTT : Kari Lehtonen, Braydon Coburn, Ilya Kovalchuk, Garnet Exelby.
To ATL : Zdeno Chara, Marian Hossa, Daniel Alfredsson.

Sens gets young #1 goaltender, franchise foward and future 1st D-Pairing guy.
Atl gets its big defensman, a very good foward to replace Kovalchuk and still young, and a born leader in Alfredsson. Nurminem still a good goalie.

It really isnt that bad of a deal as far as trade values goes, but trades like this simply dont happen.

I have forget say Ottawa save a lot of money with its trade, can easily sign UFA example Pavol Demitra.

Actually, I think the Sens lose this trade:

Chara>>>>>Exelby
Hossa=Kovalchuk
Alfreddson>>>Lehtonen (right now, but it's hard to compare a forward and a goalie)

No way this gets done. Ottawa loses it's best forward, best defenseman, and captain for Atlanta's best forward, a possible #1 goalie, and a good prospect. If I were a Sens fan, I wouldn't even consider it. Boston could give you Raycroft for Alfreddson or Havlat though...

Kovalchuk is better than Hossa not to mention 4-5 years younger.

Kovalchuk is a one dimensional forward at this point in time. Not in Hossa's class yet.

This could be a very debatable quote. Kovy is a better goal scorer but Hossa is a better all-around player and team player, not to mention he is a very good goal scorer aswell. Kovy is younger though.

Hossa is more physical, is more of a leader, is comparable in scoring ability and speed. There's no way Kovalchuk is a better overall player than Hossa right now.

Atlanta is doing fine and taking the slow route to building a playoff capabale team which is the right way to go. I don't see Atlanta trading Kova or Kari right now.

I don't get why the Sens would pass on this?

Kovalchuk - Spezza - Havlat

That'd be your #1 line.. all budding young superstars.. that'd be great pieces to build around. It gives the Sens a real solid goalie down the road as well.. right now they're borderline contenders, but give that deal 2 years and they're favourites, are they not ?

You didn't mention Coburn ??

Why would Atlanta make this trade ?

Atlanta makes the trade because they get a Top 10 forward in the league, a Top 5 defenseman and a captain in Alfreddson who can put up 80 points per year.

Ottawa gets a Top 10 forward, a possible #1 goalie, and a good #3 or #4 d-man. Coburn was dropped a little later in the thread, and instead of Coburn and Exelby, it was changed to just Exelby.

Ottawa loses big time.

The trade also rips the heart out of Ottawa and significantly weakens the defense. Exelby and Coburn will not replace Chara and Kovalchuk cannot replace Hossa's two-way play or Alfie's leadership. In general, these teams are not a good fit for trades and this proposal doesn't make any sense.

Kovalchuk is one-dimensional because that is what's asked of him. Atlanta tries to outscore the opposition, they don't have the system or players to play the system Ottawa has. I'd take Kovalchuk over Hossa any day of the week.

Plus, room for further growth is something to consider in trades. There is nothing to suggest that Kovalchuk couldn't be just as rounded as Marian in the next couple years.

This trade doen't work for either side, IMO. It's a core swap and that just isn't a good idea.

But Ottawa is making a run for the Cup now. You don't get rid of your best forward, best defenseman and your captain for a really good forward, and 2 prospects if you're in Ottawa's position.

That's part of why I said this isn't a good trade of either side. It's a core swap. Ottawa has a current core and a good chunk of Atlanta's core is still in development. A byproduct of Ottawa joining the league 7-8 years earlier.

Oh ok, I misread your post. No harm done. But yeah, the trade is crap for Ottawa, but if I were Atlanta, I'd take the trade and run.

I don't think Atlanta wants any part of this trade, either.

Atlanta is giving up 2/3rds of their future. No way that happens.
