Terrible news if true, but it will open up a chance for other prospects too.

I can't even begin to fathom the money that he was offered by that ridiculous league. Oh well.

My guess is he looked at the depth chart. Hall, Magnus and Smyth, with Yakupov and Eberle and he realized he was never going to get a clear shot in Edmonton and so he went for money. Look for the oilers to lose more prospects over the next couple of years. Oilers have so many prospects in different parts of the system, that more and more will fall through the cracks. This is the first one. Lander is the next one

he probably wasn't confident enough on making starting roster, so he went where the money was.

Probably bigger money and a guarantee to play on a higher caliber team in a higher caliber league. Thems the breaks. We can now commence totally hating the guy and downgrading him as an AHLer of no consequence in 3, 2, 1....

Direct fallout of extending useless Smyth.

Terrible.

I tend to agree with all the posters above me but in reality here are the facts:

1) When given a shot to play in the top 6, he did nothing.
2) When given powerplay time he was largely ineffective even in front of the net.
3) He rarely played to his size.

JF Jacques part II. Good in the AHL, below average in the NHL.

Best of luck Teemu!

This would be bad. His size and potential around net is much needed here. Certainly a shortage of this type player in stock.

I will wait til someone else confirms it. This would suck if true. I suppose we'd hold his rights, so there's that. If he had given it one more year he probably would have made it.

He would have to clear waivers next year, too. You'd think he would give it one more shot but like you said the money must have been stupid.

Yep, I feel like this too.

Would have been nice to see him take the next step, he was given a few opportunities to show he belonged and he couldn't do it.

That's a shame. Especially with our new coach's reputation for working with young players needing that extra push to make it.

This is definitely a loss for us. It would have been nice to have him for one more year.

Not on a good hockey team, no.

Unless he spent the entire summer doing speed skating drills.

He just didn't have the aggression or foot speed to play the role we wanted. IMHO.
