TSN calls The World Championships a "Best-on-Best Tournament"

This year's World Championship will mark the final best-on-best men's tournament before rosters are submitted for the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Great to see this Tournament is finally getting the recognition it deserves - The World's tournament measures depth with different types of skilled players on the Olympic Sized "Big Ice"

It's as close as you can reasonably get on a yearly basis. What's the issue?

I just prefer to save that term for Olympic tournaments when all players, including NHL players, can participate without conflict with league games.

Yea, cept half of the best players are playing in the NHL playoffs right now, not sure how anyone could say that statement is correct. The Olympics where that is said.

They cut off the 2nd part

Best-on-best (outside the NHL playoffs)

TSN is wrong.

Seeing as they are broadcasting it, hard not to fault them for attempted hype.

Just what I was thinking when I saw the thread title.

TSN wants to get as many viewers and ratings as possible, so of course they are going to hype it up, even if it means they are lying or misleading.

Well technically there is no such thing as a "True Best on Best" - But the recognition just supported the prevalent idea (in the Hockey World - not just here) that it's among the Best

How are the Olympics not a "true best on best"?

Each nation gets to pick whatever players they want.

In his other thread, markz believes any tournament where a team does not beat every other top team is not "best on best." In summary, it is basically a gripe with the tournament format vs round robin.

Also, it is not "Olympic ice." The IIHF has now recognized on numerous occasions that events held in North America are valid when held on NHL-sized ice. I believe that the European and North American ice surfaces are now both officially considered international ice and neither is considered more valid than the other.

If one reads the link, it is just the opinion of Shane McNeil, a single TSN producer, who is probably just trying to hype the event TSN is broadcasting.

Well, shame on TSN. That probably upsets the average Canadian hockey fan...

Only Olympics and World Cups count! And only those held in North America, others aren't as important.

Well, it's more about the depth of each nation.

Canada can still easily ice a full NHL team, and while I say that there are players on the german, suomi, danish, austrian, whatever roster who could compete in the NHL, those teams are hit harder by their few NA Players declining due to the NHL/AHL Playoffs.

But i guess you could say that it is as close as it gets to a best-on-best, outside of the olympic games... Where, and give me some love here guys, you will miss germany.

I've always like the World Championships. That said it's not a best on best tournament. The best on best tournament for international hockey is the Olympics.

Where did you read/hear this? Sounds like quite a drastic change to how international competitions work in hockey, and I would assume that the NHL isn't exactly enthusiastic about such a change.

Goes double for the U.S especially.

Look at what they're missing right now:

Brown, Backes, Callahan, Kessel, Gardiner (not the biggest loss, until you look at what they have for D over there), Suter

Then you have guys like Wheeler and Buff who didn't even bother making the trip

I haven heard kal€ say anything like that, where did you heard that?

Personally I hope it's not even considered, world championships are fun at the early summer when you can barbeque and watch the games.

The KHL wants it moved to February so as to accommodate a longer more NHL like schedule for the KHL while not impacting the World Championships. Like the NHL cares? They can move the World Hockey Championships to February but the NHL will not shut down for 3 weeks every February so that it's players can participate in it. It's a mere pipe dream really. So, a move to February will result in ZERO NHL players participating in this event and a true downgrade of this tournament to permanent C status.

World Championships is especially unfair for the nations who only have 2-5 NHLers that are all in the NHL Playoffs.

I know Winnipeg aren't in the playoffs but in Div I Kazakhstan was missing Antropov & Khudobin. Belarus is missing Grabovski and could miss Kostitsyn most seasons. Those teams missing those players is a much bigger impact on their performance than Canada missing some of their stars, but nobody ever talks about that

I guess a good example could be Nathan Walker (Australia) - When he's playing in North America, it's unlikely he'll leave mid ECHL/AHL season to play for Australia in Div 2B or 2A which takes place in mid-April. So they lose their only true impact player.

This. Its ridiculous idea.. I think IIHF president's would've told something for media about it if it was really on intrest.

Just play the World Championships when NHL normally has training camps, then it becomes best on best, and it works as training camp in the same time for some players, they get some games in their belt. It would be so easy that way. But of course no, things must be done wrong.
