I think Clarkson is a top 6 forward who the Leafs should try to acquire. On top of his physical presence, he is a 20-30 goal guy who'd be excellent beside Kadri. However, we should not be overpaying for his services.

Lupul - Kadri - Clarkson

Something like this would work... only barried liles cause I dont know how to trade him away on cap geek... Really think Weiss is our #1C next year
We shouldn't give Weiss 5.5.

Also if Kostka gets resigned... I quit

We don't need Weiss. Keep Bozak.

You won't get Clarkson cheaper than 4ish

I wish we'd stop anticipating signing Clarkson. We're setting ourselves up for a possible disappointment.

Devils fans have a love-hate relationship with Clarkson. Many of them say he has the worst hockey IQ in the league.

No way! That never happens around here! I still think there's a good chance Getz and Perry end up here.

He has terrible, terrible hockey iq. I dont really want him if it is more than 3.5/per.

I dont see Stephen Weiss getting 5.5 Million. Than again, i didn't think Grabo would get it either.

If the Toronto media would just shut up about it we might not have to massively overpay for once.

Sign Kostka for cheap. We can eventually trade him for a peak. He is a victim of a system that our players don't often buy.

As for centres, I don't want Weiss, period. That need isn't that critical and it's not like he'd compliment Kessel at all. In fact, if Kadri wants to gel with Kessel, he will have to finish those plays. In other words, we need a finisher in the middle.

No Weiss,wont happen.

$5.5 million! No way it will handcuff us if a good center becomes available and we wont be able to resign Kessel either.Let Macarthur go and sign Clarkson, sure but a reasonable price.Taking away from NJ while Brodeur ages,I like.

He had a "Kulemin year" where he scored 30 but that will probably be the only time... I like his physical play and his willingness to go to the net though.

5 years @ $4M per and i would be all over it. BUT he will demand much much more! I think to pry him away it will take $5M per over 6 years...

Might be too steep a price considering we have a ton of depth at the RW position.

Like a few of you guys, I see some a lot parallels between Armstrong and Clarkson and certainly none between Gary Roberts and Clarkson. Starting with their position and anticipated salary demands to the roll they're expected to play on this team. The difference is that Clarkson is better suited for this team than Armstrong was (despite our record when he was in the line-up) but only marginally. I don't think Carlyle would be able to put up with his brain farts in the neutral zone and realistically, he would probably end up riding the pine much like Armstrong did. If he's down for 2-year deal around $3.5 million, I would bite the bullet and hope that he fits in nicely with McClement and Komorov or Grabovski (assuming he's still here) and Kulemin.

Armstrong broke down, that was the issue. When healthy, he was an effective player.

We could use a player like David Clarkson, but not if we overpay. Even Colby Armstrong money is a bit much in my mind, and probably not enough to land him.

Definitely would be a good edition. Some top 9 toughness which we lack. But most I'd pay is 4m. No more then that.

I don't like the idea of ANY free agent being a "priority" - it encourages overpayment and lengthy terms we shouldn't be committing - is this not exactly what got Burke into trouble with his signings?

idn why people are so concerned with over paying... nonis wont. Plus we never know what can happen, it has all the potential to be a lupul like wake up. As long as this team keeps stocking up on people who have the potential to score while playing a strong overall game, the team will continue to get better and better. Playoff teams always have multiple people who can put the puck in the net, and this would be a good signing!

JvR - Bozak - Kessel
Lupul - Kadri - Clarkson
Kulemin - McClement - Komarov
McLaren - Hamilton - Orr

If Clarkson is 20 goals + grit, then sick line up

Clarkson would be a Gary Roberts type. He's an essential, IMO, and it's smart got Nonis to use Dreger as a mouthpiece.

Is it a foregone conclusion that he'll even leave Jersey?

He would not have a career without Peter DeBoer, he was acquired for cash in the OHL by Deboer, thats how low his stock was and despite being undrafted, DeBoer developed him into an NHL caliber player. I'd kind of think he'd want to stay with DeBoer.

Actually I do. I was trying to find some info on exactly this topic regarding Clarkson just yesterday. Don't really see the big deal in reporting it.

Maybe Dreger is doing Nonis a favour by letting it be known that he is interested in Clarkson - not a bad time to let the cat out of the bag wiht the Leafs in the midst of a playoff series - Clarkson is at home spectating.
