When I was about 9, I was arguing hockey with a kid named Steve who happened to be a big Booby Hull fan. Since I was unable or unwilling to give credit to anyone outside the CH org., I told him that Bobby Hull was no good defensively.[I couldn't think of anything else] He promptly told me that 'He's not a defensive player, you idiot'. I haven't seen that Steve guy in about 40 years, but I assume he knew he was right.
u framed your argument all wrong 40 years ago- Bpbby Hull stood up for himself and didnt need no help in teh corners, protection etcbut he has weak defensively (see Canada Cup 76 - never got on teh ice with bowman)

I think that K10 and chooch go a little overboard with the Gretzky bashing because if anyone utters the slightest word against him people come out in droves to say that you're wrong and he's perfect.
Yeah, he's got some purty chompers. Unfortunately, old horse-face is missing something too (I mean, aside from a bearable mug): a backbone and testicles.
I don't think defensive specialists like Lehtinen can be considered the "best all-round" players. for whatever reason, many people see a lack of defensive play as a flaw, but a lack of offensive talent is excusable.
Lehtinen is top-notch defensively, but simply decent offensively. There's numerous players in the league right now who are excellent offensive players and good in their own end as well.
personally, i would always take a top offensive player before a top defensive player, just because it's a lot easier to find (or create) good defensive forwards than it is to find talented offensive ones.

He even was taking key face-offs at centre for the Capitals on their run to the Finals. Washington's coach said he did all the little things to get them there.

The most complete player I think (I never saw him in person) was Gordie Howe. I am only making my observation from film though. I was thinking about Orr but I'm not sure that he had all the aspects covered, I think he lacked the physical presence. The most complete player I've personally seen and I was actually never a huge fan while he was playing, was Ray Bourque. He could play tough "D" or play offense. He could stay at home or lead the rush, he could protect the "skill guys" even though he was a skill guy himself. Now that I read my description of Bourque it sounds like Clark Gilles, he could score or play "D" or beat the crap out of you.........ah hell, flip a coin and pick one, I can't.
Orr could really hit and was a punishing bodychecker. Also as Don S. Cherry has noted on many ocassions he could throw them with the best. Orr was challenged early in his career but won virtually all his fights. He was over 100 PIM's in five seasons. Orr was also a shot blocker par excellence. I would rate him the best skater of all time. There may have been a few who were faster in a straight away competiton but no one could put it into overdrive faster than #4

Orr was fairly tough, but if he was hit the Bruins wouldn`t be shy about sending someone over to have a "chat" with the guy who did it, especially in `74-`75 when Cherry was the coach. Orr was also much better defensively than he ever received credit for. If the Bruins pulled the goalie for an extra attacker and the other team gained puck possession, Orr would often quickly slide back to the goalie crease and "play goal"; you rarely see anyone do that. I`ve seen several articles from that era where writers would criticize Orr for not playing defensively enough. Almost as ridiculous as the claims that Gretzky scored so many points because of his linemates, but we won`t get into that. We`re trying to be nice to each other.
Gordie Howe. What can you say? If he never hit anybody he would still be a legend because of his scoring. If he couldn`t score he would still be a legend because of his toughness. It`s beyond incredible that he could combine it all, and amazingly do it for so long. Did the doctors inject him with some superhuman drug after he almost died in the Ted Kennedy incident? No normal person could have achieved what he did.

I'll give you the Orr vote. I was on the fence about him because I only saw the bad knees Orr live and the "original" on tape so I didn't have all the info. I did vote for him in a thread for the greatest player of all time though over Gretz because he had the whole package.

My list goes like this. First off its Howe, then Trottier. Howe just did everything. He won four straight scoring titles but believe it or not he may be remembered better for his toughness. Trottier was good at everything too. But my nod goes to Howe.
On defense you'd have to say Orr, followed very, I mean very closely by Harvey. After that Robinson and Potvin round out the top 4. Harvye always gets lost in the mix of best d-men ever let alone most complete. If Orr had never been born Harvey would be #1 of all time.
And you bring your bodyguards with you to support your girlfriend gretzky. Funny you're just like 99 you need bodyguards
