Opera? (national anthems)

How far removed from your core consumer do you have to be to think opera singers should perform the national anthems?

Most teams have plenty of fans who are ready, willing and able to sing their respective anthems. Something that creates infinitely more atmosphere than opera singers who can only sing with a weird Swedish accent.

What's next: Swan Lake during intermissions? Yacht-salesmen pushing their product on the unsuspecting fans?

I'm a hockey and opera fan.

Sounds good to me. Do you know who it was that sang it?

Dunno, but the one singing Sweden's is appreciated by most Swedes. The singers for the other countries maybe aren't as sharp.

Appreciated in a sort of "not the best but I'm loving the effort"-type of way.

At least we have Paranoid played live.
That has to count for something.

I remember the games in Germany.
Who was the guy that sang all the national anthems?
I remember thinking that this is propably what Finnish sounds to an untrained ear.

That lady was ridiculous. Lovin' the jersey over her right shoulder, though.

Same here. I appreciate the singer effort but our anthem before game against Germany was torture!

Norwegian anthem has been utterly and completely butchered so far. Just play the tune and let the crowd do the singing.

I don't know who makes the decisions...Can Sweden and Finland make their own decisions or are everything organized by IIHF?

But anyways if they think this is cool or something...they are wrong. 99.9% of hockey people don't give a damn about some opera singing. It's horrible... the singing should stay in Opera Houses.

I haven't been able to view the anthems at this year's World Championship, but how do they compare to the award-winning opera singer and judge on Canada's Got Talent, Measha Brueggergosman?

Better, at least in the games I've seen.

She's a pretty esteemed opera singer in Canada. She performed the Olympic Hymn at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver beautifully. It just shows opera-singing and national anthems don't entirely mix:

I love both, the Swiss and the Canadian anthem. But on Sunday both anthems were just AWFUL!

You can be an opera singer without making the anthem a piece. Just use your voice to sing it properly and with the tempo that is intended. From my experience nothing kills an anthem like dragging it out and making twists along the way.

It was only last year they changed the national anthem being played before the group stage games, before it was only one anthem being played for the winning team, and last year they continued the old way for the knockout round.
