Ya, there was a sensational trial that followed in November 53 in Barrie, the guy charged of the Aurora Bears, Walter Fines, acquitted in just under 4hrs of Jury deliberation. With less than 2mins to play in an 8-2 pasting of the Bears by Collingwood in a Playoff Game, Fines recklessly drove Gillies into the boards, a 30 minute brawl ensuing, clearing both benches & involving team staff & fans. Gillies Mother called it Murder on Ice after a frantic ambulance ride to Toronto, the poor guy dying en-route.... I believe the old Collingwood Arena is still standing, was re-named the Eddie Bush Memorial Arena as old Eddie there enjoyed quite a lengthy stint as a popular Coach throughout the 50's. Collingwood a bit of a heavyweight in OHA circles at the Jr.B/C & Senior levels.
