The guy with multiple Selkes or the guy who is pretty average on defense.

Hmmmm....

2-way implies balance. One has a bunch of selkes, the other is okay defensively at best.

You'd be wrong. It's good for your typical top-line center, but it's not good in an overall sense.

Crosby is absolutely phenomenal offensively, and pretty damn good defensively. Datsyuk is absolutely phenomenal defensively, and pretty damn good offensively.

This is my thinking of it as well.

Sid is better than average defensively for a #1 center IMO but Dats is the best in the league and an unappreciated stud.

Datsyuk is still one of the best offensive centers in the league. You never see Crosby in the talk of the best defensive centers.

Datsyuk was a top-ten scorer and may also get the Selke.

Although I think a lot of people underestimate Crosby's defensive game - he's definitely much better than average - this isn't much of a debate. Datsyuk is a perennial contender for Selke and that's not just based on reputation. He's earned that recognition with an excellent commitment to defense over the years.

The truth is that I don't think Crosby would ever have a chance to win a Selke, not because he's incapable of raising his defensive game to that level, but because his highlights are all about possession in the offensive zone. At this point, he's typecast!

Depends on your definition of "two-way":

Better defensive forward: Datsyuk

Better overall offense+defense (hence the "two" way): Crosby.

But I mean if you use the latter definition then you could argue that Gretzky and Mario are better two way players than Federov (because their mindblowing offense supplanted their lack of effort/talent on defense). So therefore I guess the way the term is used is in the former sense, hence if we accept that definition, then Datsyuk in this case.

two-way? crosby, ainec. he's the best offensive player in the league and he's still pretty good defensively for being a 1C that scores at a ridicilous PPG

if you only want to talk about the defensive side, i think there's plenty of role players who play a good "2 way game" then

I'm surprised the vote is as lop-sided as it is. I'm guessing people seriously underestimate Crosby's defensive game.

People forget what 2-way means... the question wasn't who is the best defensive forward. The difference between Crosby's offence is greater than the difference between Datsyuk's defence imo

It seems like you're the one that doesn't understand. If we want to use that metric, Gretzky is the best two-way player in history, because while his defense was not very good, his offense was off the charts. It doesn't fly.

Two-way is someone that is good in both the offensive zone and defensive zone. Deficiency in one isn't balanced by better performance in the other. It's about balance.
