If Jordan Leopold gets a contract next season

It will be proof that some GMs rely on player reputation rather than watch how they actually play.

For a player that supposedly is an offensive defenseman, he has just 204 points in 625 career games. He's been down right disappointing in the past 2 seasons (his play this past season could be best be described as a train wreck).

He's not good enough defensively alone to stay in this league unless he is providing offense, which he hasn't been consistently.

This is really worthy of a thread?

There are far worse defensemen in this league than Jordan Leopold, guy. Him getting a contract is nothing to worry about.

Bozak will be another one to watch, although he does deserve a contract.

Cam Barker was arguably the worst defenseman in the league in Minnesota. He then signed in Edmonton where he went on to be arguably the worst defenseman in the league again. He then signed in Vancouver where he was arguably the worst defenseman in the league for the third straight year.

Do you need more proof that some GMs rely on player reputation/draft status and/or just really like reclamation projects?

it's amazing how far Leopold has fallen from the Flames '04 Cup run. At age 23 he looked like a franchise defenseman in the making. Ten years later he might be out of the league.

Leopold is strong in the right situation. He'll find a good fit for himself somewhere.

since this is a garbage thread anyway let me just vent about jordan leopold on the blues:

the blues acquired him as a dependable left-handed offensive d for the playoffs, probably just as a rental. they would've preferred something more permanent, like jay bouwmeester, but leopold will do for now.

and then that fat blundering idiot feaster comes in, sees that on tsn, and drops his kfc bucket in horror. so here he is in calgary fumbling for the phone with his greasy mitts because he realizes that he was supposed to give the blues bouwmeester for his needed picks and he probably tried to position so hard he made it look like he wasn't interested at all.

so here's doug armstrong, just acquired one defenseman, having that idiot feaster calling him up being like "oh hey do you guys still want this defender?"

yes we do feaster but we would've preferred to not have traded away our 2nd rounder already because you get short of breath reaching across the desk for your phone.

whatever

Why does Feaster care if the Blues wasted assets on Leopold?

IIRC Detroit was also in on Bouwmeester.

To be fair Bozak is a 27 year old 50pt center who is good defensively, great in the faceoff circle and solidly kills penalties.

Granted he's not going to be worth the 5 mil someone pays him, but he's better than people seem to give him credit for.

I was gonna say something like this.

Just because guys aren't Bobby Orr doesn't mean they're terrible or need to be out of the league.

Put him in the right situation with a good partner and guess what.....he'd probably be alright.

to suggest that it would ridiculous for any GM to even offer him a contract is ridiculous in itself.

In all honesty, I wouldn't mind keeping him for the right price as a #5/6 guy. If Russel and Cole weren't waiting for roster spots, he'd be almost guaranteed.

He sucks, but he's a veteran presence who might be able to fit in to a young team. I don't want him back on the Blues, as far as I'm concerned the Sabres fleeced us in that trade, must have been payback for the Boyes deal.
